Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

Hey guys, lately i have really been gasing for a tele, and my latest trip to gc brought it to me harder. I played a MIJ 62 RI hardtail strat and loved it. Best part is i can get it for $400-$450 including tax(they have it at $450 plus tax). The gas has gotten so bad, im contemplating selling my current guitar (a samick valley arts custom one peice ash bodied tele copy) to finance it. I figure i can get $200 from gc for my guitar, i have about $200 floating around, and either sell some gear i never use...which i have some of... or wait til next paycheck. I really do want to get it. The problem is is my Dad. Im 17 and he does not understand why i need this thing. My m0om understands but my dad does not. Now, after several purchases behind his back(peavey classic, my current guitar) i am relegated to get his permission on purchases. How would i go about convincing him that this is a worthwile investment?
Thanks a lot,
Brian

Tell him that this will get you rich because it has great tones, you can get a recording deal, and you'll remember him when you're up there getting your Grammy.

lol. That would be great. The problem is its not the tones i dont like out of my samick(it has been upgraded with duncans, switchcrafts, cts pots and an orange drop, plus the body is a great peice of ash) i really like the tone, but the way it plays doesnt suit me too well. It has 24 frets and id perfer a 21 or 22 fret guitar as well as a very flat radius and i find 7 1/2 very comfortable for me. I think ill just get my mom on my side. Im really just looking to convince him to respect his rules. If i bought it anyway, there wouldnt bee too much problems just it would upset him at not following his rules.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

well, just say that you love your guitar that you have now, but it just dosnt suit your style of playing. Tell him you wanna get into the type of music he really likes and that this guitar is perfect for it. And it sounds like I want yours. I've got a vintage style guitar, wanna trade?

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

It worked w/ my dad when I told him I wanted to trade my LP knockoff for a strat "whats the matter with the guitar you have now" " I cant play SRV and Jimi on it, it dosnt sound right" 10 minutes later, we were hocking my LP for a strat. LOL.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

Haha... parents and girlfriends don't seem to understand why us musicians need more guitars. My dad isn't too far off from yours bvc. "I thought you said this last one was perfect?" They can hear a difference in my style now, but I guess they don't piece together the fact that I might actually want a guitar that better suits that style.

Way to go beandip! My dad isn't a huge music fan and I don't think he understands even the classic stuff (SRV and Jimi would be way over his head). I think that's good advice to mention what the new gear will do (and make sure to twist it in their favor..heh heh). I just tell my parents that I'll be able to play cleaner with it and that already warms them up to the idea ;)

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

my dad owns about 40 guitars now.. so he understands that 1 isnt enough.

try to tell ur pops that the fender will have better resale value.... or some bull****

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

Are you really really really sure that this is the guitar that you want? How many strats have you played?

Don't think I am being negative here I am just trying to see it from his point of view. What he is probably trying to do is to save you money in the long run. For everyone that has said I must have that guitar because it is the one for me a few weeks down the line you may well be either upgrading it or selling it at a loss. Can you see my point?

What I would suggest is that you get your dad on your side and perhaps look at other guitars, take him along with you (and your mom) make it a family outing and let him be part of the decision making process so that he is involved. That way you will not have any animosity or bad feelings between your Dad and also your Mom/Dad.

FWIW - many many years ago my father bought me my '62 strat and '59 LP when I was starting out and and he was not a musician. But I always asked his advice and did not do things behind his back. He encouraged me and took a great deal of pride in what I had achieved, although he would have liked me to joined him and be part of his business he was running.

Anyway good luck in whichever way you go.

lol yes, im sure. ive played hundreds of strats in all price ranges, i really did love this one. Great craftsmanship, sound, and playabilty. The pnly potential upgrade in the near future would be pickups which i already have laying around ready for a guitar so no loss there. The same guitar is running for quite a bit more on ebay(the cheapest i saw was $450 starting bid, but most were higher). I think ill just explain why i want it, and if he doesnt get it dont worry too much about it, ill just take my mom with me instead. He knows he does not understand musical need, so i try to explain to him in terms of computer upsgrades(he is a computer freak) and that gets the point across better. There really is no animosity, just id perfer to get him on my side before making the purchase. Thanks a lot,
Brian

I think it's funny sometimes when parents question why you want/need something. I'm 23 now so I buy what I want these days, but when I bought a half stack a few months ago (previously only had a practice amp), apparantly there was a conversation along these lines:

My Dad: "Why does he need an amp so powerful?"
My Brother: "Would you say you can get your car up to about 100+ mph?"
My Dad: "Yes"
My Brother: "Why do you need a car so fast? The maximum speed in the UK is 70 mph."

The question wasn't asked again :laugh2:

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

Good decision, if your gonna get a strat, get a hardhail strat.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

I was in your situation when I was in college and wanted to trade in my first guitar which sucked pretty bad for one that sucked less -- I envy the quality of guitars available for a decent price these days. Anyway, my father wasn't too understanding but finally relented. Looking back on it, I don't think he spent a lot of money on things he wanted in those days either, so it was not directed specifically at me, but rather reflected general money concerns. In any case, I would make sure that this guitar will satisfy your needs for many years. Strats are pretty amenable to alterations, so I can't fault your choice at this stage, but a Tele is a beautiful thing.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

do they collect wine or something. My parents have this wine seler in our house that keeps on magicly filling up more and more each week. So whenever i want new gear and they say i dont need it i tell them they don't need anymore wine, and that they dont even drink 99 percent of the bottles down there. They say its bc the wine gets better with age. I say that guitars do too.

Works all the time for me.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

I didn't even notice this thread when I posted this one. It should give you plenty of reasons to buy a Strat this year.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

illini, i tried that with my parents, didnt work

if u guys figure something out, post, i am gassing for a strat as well.

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

music is proven to make people more intelligent, tell him your uninspired at the moment musically and that if he doesnt support you with this, it's like telling you to get stupider :)

Re: Strat GAS!!!+ convincing parents why!

I'm 19, so my parents don't really have much to say anymore about me getting new stuff besides "Oh, is that a new one?".

EDIT: My bandmates, on the other hand, are always jokingly giving me guff about it.. mainly stuff like "Do you spend your money on anything besides gear?"

But back when they would've had some say in it, they understood that it was something I enjoyed. I've bought everything I own with my own money, so that was never an issue with them. I guess I just got lucky when I was younger
