Strat going out of tune more easily than before...

Hey all,

My strat seems to be going out of tune more easily than before. Can tuning peds get worse? Are the screws on top of the pegs for adjusting their tightness? Should I try this?

Thanks,

Joe

tighten the screws, but, umm, maybe something else is different. New strings? Different winding. Nut lube? whammy springs? New gauge strings? Change of season? New-found ear? Pitch-shifter pedal still on? ;) Good luck :scratchch

Check the calendar...and or weather... I think late Fall is the worst period of the year for a guitar.

Usually it is not the tuners. Usually it is because the string is catching on the nut or string saddle or slipping on the tuner post because it was not tied properly. Get some emery cloth and polish your string saddle tops and make sure the six holes in the bridge baseplate that the string passes through are not rough and catching the windings of the string. Lew

Make certain that you're stretching the strings out, as well. One good bend on a string that isn't stretched out and you're in subsonic zone.

Sounds like a classic case of the intonation drifting off, due to the neck being effected by the weather change. Or, it's been too long since the guitar's had a pro setup, or you've messed with some aspect of the setup that negatively effected the intonation.

Refer to the intonation thread in the Vault. Anytime you have tuning issues, the first place to go is a thorough re-intonation. That means making sure that all the notes on the fretboard read as close to dead center on a tuner as possible.....not just the open and 12th fretted notes.

Thanks. It's time I worked on the intonation to begin with.

Old is usually when the string are really discolored, and the tone is seriously degraded. Also ya, make sure when you re string your strings, you strech them because they go out of tune very easily if you dont. And ever after streching it may take a few plays to get them settled in. If tits a tremolo strat, make sure your bridge isn't floating too much, because that may be somehting taking it out of tune as well. at most it should be iether flushed against the body or i believe its 1/8 of and inch (?) of the body?
