Strat Hot Stack not so hot

I have a Hot stack in the bridge, a stock pup in middle, and a ssl5 in the neck of my MIM Strat. Strangely enough, the Hotstack is considerably lower in output. I can't believe that's normal.

What say ye?

Re: Strat Hot Stack not so hot

I had a Hot Stack once. I've always thought that it was mis-named. It isn't "hot" at all. On the other hand, it does have a very nice tone. I'm guessing that its "hot" as compared to the Classic Stack, which is an even more mellow humbucker. It may also be "hot" as compared to stock vintage Fender pups. It definitely won't keep up with an SSL-5.

But it is a nice sounding pup.

Re: Strat Hot Stack not so hot

The Fender stock pups are hotter, so yes, it's seriously misnamed, also in the tone charts it has the 'hot' symbol. First time a SD description is deceptive.
I have a Tele with a Tele Hot Stack, and that's an entirely different beast : it's what's advertised, a hot single coil without hum. I was hoping the same for my strat, obviously I was misled. I'm not happy with that.

Any recommandations for a hot single coil without hum? No Hot Rails, it's got to much mids. Right now, I'd even prefer if it isn't Seymour Duncan.

I'm getting a Bill Lawrence L-298SL for the neck of my Strat. I'll let you know what that's like.

Re: Strat Hot Stack not so hot

your pot could be bad, the height of the pups could be uneven and therfore you will get a sound drop or a raise in volume

Re: Strat Hot Stack not so hot

I like to think that the output of a pickup relates more to the way it responds to strings and picking dynamics rather than just the volume of the pickup. The Hot Stack was designed to be a scorcher, but it came out being better for blues/rock/country styles. If adjusting the heights of the pickups is not satisfactory, The JB Jr. and Hot Rails are real scorchers.

I was actually thinking of trying the same thing...I guess I won't do it. What about the Cool Rails?
