Right now I have a completely stock fat strat but am planning on getting some SD's soon. I play blues almost exclusively and am looking for a classic strat tone, clapton/srv/knopfler.

If you were in the same position, would you convert it to an SSS strat, or just keep a bucker in the bridge?

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

i would keep the bucker in the bridge, because you can split it if you want to. its always good to have that hb in the bridge, just in case. hss is a much more versatile setup that sss.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

I want a fat strat sometime, mainly for the hard-rock/metal tones i want, but ill have it splittable.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

SSS, All the way!!! If you get to where you want the HB sound, then drop a JB jr, or a L'il 59 in the bridge! Of course, you could just as easily replace the pickguard. However, something about the looks of a SSS strat just appeals to me!

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

If you're ever gonna use higher gain your gonna want a bucker in the bridge. Otherwise, from what you've said "classic strat tone" go S/S/S...

A split hum will sound "like" an sc, but nowhere near as good as a real sc.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

SSS all the way. If you need a hot bridge pickup put a Twangbanger in there. I don't really like S/S/HB Strats much at all. I like humbuckers and I like single coils but not both types on the same guitar.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

Lew did you get that PM I sent you about pickup prices a couple days ago?

I was leaning towards SSS, and this thread along with looking at hb prices has convinced me, SSS.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

Oo a twangbanger bridge, from the clips flank posted a while back thats reason enough to stay S/S/S

+1

Call me an old fart (please!), but I think Strats should have single coils, even if the bridge one is beefed up a little. For SRV, Knopfler and Clapton you should definitely go SSS.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

I voted for SSS. I've always thought the Fat Strats, were a good idea that just didn't work out that well. The in between positions, are what make a Strat for me, and the only HSS Strat I've ever played that had good quack with a bridge 'bucker, was a Tom Anderson, with the "vintage voicing" option.
On the other hand I love a Firebird style mini 'bucker in the neck position, I just wish there was a way to get that tone, and still have tha SSS look.

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

It all depends on what you're looking for. If you aren't going to play with distortion, keep the S-S-S.

I love a blend pot because it helps make the guitar so much more versatile. I nail both the 2 and 4 positions quack tones. Maybe it just depends on the pickups, but my WCR SRs and Dark Burst humbucker do it extremely well (they are also perfectly balanced).

If you have a blend pot, you can be on the 2nd position, blend it towards the single coil if you want it thinner, or towards the humbucker for a thicker quack. I find the best blues type quack tone is in pos. 4 and if you're using a H-S-S strat, you're going to get it easily because it's inbetween two single coils (with or without a blend pot, it doesn't matter).

As far as the "humbucker" sounding single coils, don't believe the hype, there is no such thing. There are singles and then there are overwound ones that nail p90 like tones. You will never get the fullness of a humbucker in one. If I could have replaced a humbucker with a single coil to keep the S-S-S config. on my G&L, I would have, but since there were no options, I had to route it out myself.

If you've got it set for HSS already, leave it set up that way. Unless you plan on getting a new pick-guard, then I guess you could go for the SSS, i personally like HSS better, but I don't play a lot of the stuff you mentioned...
Rock On :smoker:

Re: Strat or Fat Strat

Yea, I'm going SSS. I want it wired w/ 1 master volume, 1 master tone, and a blender pot. I'm considering two pickup combinations:

1. SSL-1 Neck/Mid with SSL-3 hot bridge

2. APS-2 Neck/Mid with Twang Banger Bridge.

Eventually my rig is going to consist of....

Guitar > Wah > (Sparkle Drive or Route 66) > Peavey Classic 30

Which of those setups would you go for? I'm aiming for Riviera Paradise/Lenny cleans, good quack in the notch positions, and good blues OD.
