Can you shoe-horn Strat pick ups into a Fender Jaguar body - at all ???

Thanx

Re: Strat pick ups into a Jaguar ?

I think on a vintage routed Jag it takes a little work but it can be done...

That said Jag pickups are actually pretty cool sounding, I don't know that I'd mess with one!

Re: Strat pick ups into a Jaguar ?

Depends whether you are willing to enlarge the pickup cavities to accommodate the larger fibreboard baseplate of a traditional Stratocaster pickup.

SD SSL-3, -4, -5, -6 and -8 Stratocaster pickups will drop straight into the regular Jaguar pickup cavity. The Hot/Cool Rails models fit directly. So would Fender-Lace Sensors, EMG-S/SA and other brands.

Obviously, not all of these replacement pickups will fit inside a Jaguar pickup cover. This is important.

The Jaguar plastic cover and metal "claw" shield combination requires a larger hole in the scratchplate than either a Stratocaster or a Rails pickup. Anything other than a Jag cover and claw leaves an unsightly gap around the pickup. This looks cheap, increases the risk of physical damage to the pickup and forms the ideal collecting place for dirt, dust, fluff, chewing gum, cigarette ash, animal hair, spilled beer and so on.

Personally, I have always quite fancied the idea of twin Firebird minibuckers on a Jag. This would require some cavity enlargement but the metal pickup surrounds would hide anything ugly.

How would the opposite sound? Jag pickups into a strat, I mean. ESP Japan makes/made a model like that.

Guys, i am asking for someone else.
He is thinking of putting CoolRails/hotRails combo in his CIJ Jaguar for a more 'metal' tone.
I do not have a Jag - would like to have one though !

Keep' em comming.

Re: Strat pick ups into a Jaguar ?

Fender CIJ Jaguar and high gain Metal is a dicey combination.

The shallow string break angles, vibrato assembly and all those steel plates contribute numerous bizarre overtones. These artefacts add charm to Indie Rock. They are the essence of Surf and Spaghetti Western instrumental guitar. At high gain levels, these noises become a royal pain. Unless you want to sound like Sonic Youth or Jack White, forget it.

I briefly tried an SSL-3T Hot, Tapped Stratocaster pickup in my CIJ Jag. I hoped that its dual output levels would provide "classic" and "power" tones at the slide of a switch. All that I got was microphonic feedback. My neck pickup at that time was an Antiquity Jag N so I decided to get a bridge position Antiquity to match it. Linking these in series gives enough power without exceeding the instrument's abilities.

Another issue when using a CIJ Jaguar for high gain music is the tuning stabilty of the OEM vibrato system.

Personally, I would not bother. If you want a Jaguar guitar geared up for loud rock music, Fender already offers one. It has humbuckers, simple switching and a stable bridge. Sell the vintage-alike and get the modernised model.
