Strat pickup advice

Re: Strat pickup advice

I had a Dimarzio Chopper in my strat with vintage noiseless pups. You won't get as big a volume jump but it pairs nicely and gives you a thick bridge tone. Right now it's in the neck of a super strat style guitar with an SH 5 Custom in the bridge.

I use a Chopper in the Tele Bridge now ~ Very Happy with it

Re: Strat pickup advice

GFS has options if you want to try out something a little lower cost. Their Premium Alnicos, lil' killers, single coil gold foils, neovin noiseless, as well as 70's greybottoms all seem to get great marks. They're all available as singles for mix n' match or as a whole set. You can buy a whole set of any of these for under $100, often less.

I posted last night in the pickup lounge about staining my Custom Flat white cover to match my JB Zebra coil. Really happy with the colour.

UPDATE:

I emailed Dimarzio with the very same question I originally posted on this thread, and they recommended the Satch Track, sayin' that while it is designed as a neck model, they say it would perform well in the bridge with lower output pups.
I think this has been an eye opener for me: even if I don't necessarly go for the Satch Track, what is your opinion over going for a neck model in the bridge position to better balance with the other pups?

Re: Strat pickup advice

Since the SSL-5 is sold only with a white cover, I was wondering if I could purchase it and then swap covers without issue, or if otherwise I had to order a cream one from the Custom Shop.

Regarding my new Strat, I will consider all your suggestions

Thanks again!

Yes, you can swap covers on the ssl5 no problem.

If you like the ssl5 for yourself as well, the STK-S6 is the noiseless version of the SSL5. Very quiet with distortion, very fat, yet still a good stratty, Gilmourish vibe

Re: Strat pickup advice

There should be no problem going for a neck model in the bridge- lots of people do that (or use a bridge pickup in the neck). If the balance works for you, then go for it.

Re: Strat pickup advice

I have tried the chopper in the bridge. It was fairly balanced sounding but brightish owing to the slanted bridge position on a strat. The satch track might do the trick though & blend well with the rest.

Have you considered a reverse slant bridge though?(hendrix style) I found the change useful enough to control an overly bright bridge position, changes the sound from twang into twong lol. A new pickguard would be cheaper than a whole new pickup if there is a swimming pool route in there.
