Strat Quack

I've found I get the best quack from my Strat (MIJ '62 reissue) when I...

1) Lower the middle pickup to reduce the output (in relation to the other two)

2) Have no tone control on the middle pickup (I have 1st tone control for neck, 2nd tone control for bridge)

It's worth spending some time experimenting with the pickup heights - there is a sweet spot for the height of the middle pickup compared with the other two, if quack is your objective.

If you like playing the middle pickup on its own then obviously there is a compromise here. The best sounding 2 and 4 positions may mean 3 is not optimally balanced with 1 and 5.

Yes, that’s the new quack.

Blackmore never used the middle pickup. And he didn’t do the in between stuff. So no quack. Just bridge or neck for him.

I’m in my 60s, so when I started playing Strats only had three way switches. So I didn’t do the quack either.

And for whatever reason I find it annoying.

Funny thing is that Blackmore's replacement in Deep Purple, Tommy Bolin, had quack for days.
