Strat question

I just got a Fender Strat with 2 humbuckers. Someone told me that it wasn't a "real" Strat without the classic 3 single coil configuration. He believes the guitar is ruined and is just another "dumb metal guitar". His words. This guy is old school. He has played Strats and Teles since the dawn of time and is into country music. What do you guys think? I respect his opinion but I think differently.

Re: Strat question

Do you honestly care what "someone" said about your guitar? If you like it, that's all that matters. I'll be building a HH Strat here in the very near future....

Re: Strat question

Crap... I've got five strats and none of them are "real." Some of them even say "Fender" on the headstock...

Of course I don't care. This thread isn't to validate my guitar. I was just curious if any others feel the way he does.

Re: Strat question

FWIW, I prefer the 3 single coil configuration. However a humbucker or two works for some people. I've heard some HH S-Style guitars sound convincingly like the 3 Single coil version.

For me, somebody calling any instrument a "dumb xxx guitar" implies that the guitar is in fact just fine and they´re just a dumb, close minded idiot ;)

Na he isn't an idiot. He is just a Strat purist. He is a cool dude. Just oldschool. I don't see it as being any different than Les Paul snobs who thumb their noses at Les Paul Customs with EMGs. I bust his balls over it all the time. He just knows what he likes and sticks with that. He doesn't think my axe sucks, he just thinks it bastardized. lol

Re: Strat question

Personally, I hate single coils.

Only way your guitar would be better was if it was just a single bridge humbucker. :D

Re: Strat question

The main questions is, do you like it? Does it suit your purposes? Does it sound the way YOU want it to? If so, you're all set.

Hell yeah. I love it. I hate single coils. lol I bought it because it had humbuckers and a hardtail.

Re: Strat question

The more pickup combos the better in my book!

My next project is definately a dual HB Strat. It might even get a ToM Bridge.

It's the shape that makes it a Strat!

Actually that's exactly what I'm building. Some would argue it's not a Strat without a trem.

I seem to prefer SSS or HH guitars, HSS always seem like a compromise to me.

Re: Strat question

Your Strat isn't a 1950's configuration, but it's still a Strat. Is a Les Paul with 498T/490R PU's not a Les Paul because it doesn't have PAF's like the ones in the 1950's? Same with a Flying V. The logic he's using is bizarre at best. Times change. Fine if he wants to live in a time warp, but most of the world moves on. Real guitar 'purists' don't play electrics anyways. Where do you draw the line and say anything new isn't any good? Does he use a rotary dial phone & have a black & white TV? Just because he arbitrarily picked a cut off date for technology doesn't mean there's any validity to it. What is he, Amish?

Personally, I don't take music advice from anyone who plays country. They have some sort of hearing defect that makes 'twang' actually sound good to them. Not like they're experts on full, rich tones.

I may not agree with everything you say, however, this statement, I +1000000000....

Re: Strat question

Check out all the Teleporno threads at this forum. Many people's entries have Telecaster shapes with totally different pickup configurations.
