Strat question

Re: Strat question

seems to me that many posts here are expressing just as strong a viewpoint in the other direction, so you're all as bad as each other.

some people like the traditional Strat configuration and sound, some people wanna change those qualities. There's room for everything. The last line from the original post is the key.......
I respect his opinion but I think differently.

Re: Strat question

most stock strat bridge single coils are not beefy enough for this dude so most of my strats have HSS set ups... and some are HH, HSH or even just a single H....

I so far have kept my 66 CS strat reissue stock for 2 reasons even if i'm really tempted to stick a Lil 59 in the bridge postion... 1-it was meant to be a vintage style strat so maybe it's best to keep it that way... 2-i have lots of HSS strats already...

The best thing about a Strat is that all you need is a new pickguard and pickups and you can be vintage, modern or all points in between.

Route that sucker out for a Floyd and now we're talking!

Bingo! I know some local blues players with Strats, a pretty conservative bunch musically I may add, and not one of them uses their bridge SC, because it's so thin & tinny. So what's the point of going with a SSS Strat to be traditional, when you can only use two of the PU's? This has always baffled me. That's why HSS was developed, so everyone can actually use the bridge PU on their Strat.

See, I actually prefer a bridge single in a strat to the neck single for leads. The middle is great for clucky rhythm. About the only thing I'll use a neck single for is single-note ringing chord playing kind of stuff.

That said, all my strats have a Super Distortion in the bridge...

Re: Strat question

An SSS Strat the way they used to make it is what they call a "Vintage (styled) Strat"
An HH Hardtail Strat is what they call a "Double Fat (hardtail) Strat".
In fact, if you type the words "Double Fat" on Google it automatically fills out the words "Strat" and 'Stratocaster" on its' own. Try it.

One is called the vintage, the other the Double Fat, both are equally Strats.
Whoever says/thinks to the contrary is nothing more than a narrow-minded purist or a complete and utter moron (which, on a personal note are just two different ways of saying the exact same thing).
And I would resent the fact of Metal being called "dumb" and by a Country guy no less if it weren't for the fact that the "pot and kettle" (*) thing hadn't popped into my mind before anything else could have... :D
(* we call it "The Donkey calling the Rooster Big-Headed" in my language but same difference really).

Seriously, everyone has their preferences, they more or less know what works for them and what not, however that doesn't give ANYONE the right of trying to belittle what other people use/like.
THAT is just "dumb".

Horses for courses here, I would like my G&L to sound like SRV's Strat in the very near future, but my T type is more a SuperTele with it's H/S/S config with a Floyd.

Re: Strat question

I have a load of Stratocasters and several have your confirguration - AND I am old school.

Tell him to learn new stuff and quit complaining

Re: Strat question

Smoke On The Water is not thin & tinny
Purple Haze is not thin & tinny
Foxy Lady is not thin & tinny
Highway Star is not thin & tinny
Comfortably Numb is not thin & tinny
Young Lust is not thin & tinny
the list goes on and on..

Re: Strat question

Jeez, How did this become a Strat SC bashing thread?? IMO the Strat style Guitar is so popular Cuz' it lends itself to any Mod you can think of. It's your guitar... Set it up any way you want!

Beauty of a comment, that's what is awesome about strats and one of things I loved about it when I had it. You can have a couple different pickguards and you're set whether you want all single coils, a bridge humbucker, whatever. I love les pauls but you're stuck with your pickup config. unlike with strats.

Re: Strat question

Well for me I like the traditional strat bridge pickup by istself but with a hard tail strat. It's a bit too thin for my tastes by itself with the trem block.

If you got enough gain at the amp or the right overdriving device, then the stock single coil gets a very unique sound that isn't thin at all.

Becha he's got a stronger than stock SC or a twang banger in the bridge position.

If you do much gigging you will quickly find out why there are so many HSS strats out there. It almost perfect for playing whole sets without changing guitars.

People have been loading strats up with HBer's for decades, and not just for playing metal.

The most interesting thing that the strat bridge single coil does in my opinion is the notch position in combination with the middle pickup. You can get a split HBer to do it decently, but if your really picky about that "sultans of swing" type sound, then only the SSS configuration will do.

Re: Strat question

^ BUt who's gonna hear your "sultans of swing" tone over a hundred loud, half-drunk college louts shouting at you to do Freebird as the football game blares in the background?
