Strat Serial #s

I've noticed that some MIM Strats start with "MN", others with "MZ".

What's the difference between these?

Also can any provide decoding for other Strat serial #'s?

Thanks!

Re: Strat Serial #s

In the case of teh Mexican strats, the first "M" signifies that it was built in Mexico. The second letter is a decade identifier. "N" was used in the nineties, "Z" is a 2000 marker. Thus, a Fender guitar that begins MN8 was made in Mexico in 1998. MZ3 would signify made in Mexico in 2003.

American made serials do not have two letters, so the first letter is the decade i.d.
