Strat singles A2P Custom??

So what is everyone's experience with the A2P singles neck middle heck even bridge? And also the custom compared to the hot. I like my tele QP lead but I don't like the strat version. It terms of output (pushing the amp not dc) how comparable is a custom or hot and tonally. Right now I don't have audio to listen.

Re: Strat singles A2P Custom??

I use the APS-2 neck and middles with a Twangbanger bridge pickup. The APS-2 has a vintage output and tone, but it's alittle thicker and chunkier in the mids and a little smoother in the treble. It's classic Stratty bright...but not as edgey and glassy. I think they push my amps a little harder than the vintage a5 Strat pickups in my '63. I like 'em. I like the Antiquity Surfers more...but I like the APS-2's and use them when I need to hear something differant from the glassy bright a5 Strat pickups I use in all of my other Strats. Lew

Ahhh Lew you're a saint! I was hoping to hear from you on this. I don't like the brittleness in the upper register with my tele QPs so thats why I'm wanting something that will calm down the strat. So are you actually recommending a a2p set? I play hard rock but have never had strat singles on P90s and tele pups. In fact I got the tele b/c the strat I was looking at sounding weak and flabby next to the tele. I'll list the duncans I've got or had experience with where maybe you can ascertain a feel for my tastes.

A2PH bridge :) jazz n :) Qps tele :) P90 custom neck and bridge :) PG+ (but tired of it thus the singles) 59 :) JB, in my heritage, was bad, in a US jackson through my amp...bad.

What I'm looking for.

Smooth neck pup (but not flabby bass I have a tube recto) that sounds good clean and strummed not muddy though so I can chunk out some distorted rythym.

Middle pup that will do the same as the neck but but brighter and sound good for soloing.

The bridge I want to have a gritty maybe? somewhat agressive possibly? but not really...sound. That's why I'm thinking custom. I want to be able to have some good sustain which thus far I have never seen from a strat single bridge.

I have NEVER played seymour strat singles....I don't think. :laugh2:

Sure! I'll recommend them. I think they're a great set. Especially for those looking for a tone with smoother highs and chunkier mids that'll push the amp a little harder than conventional vintage Strat pickups.

What you are asking them do is exactly what I hear that set as being designed to do.

I have heard from some of the guys at Seymour Duncan that Jeff Beck is a big fan of the Alnico Pro Strat pickups and has used them alot over the years...that's a pretty good recomendation there too!

I'm with LEW! The APII neck & middle with the TWANGBANGER bridge is a great set... vintage tones with warmth and a butt-kickin bridge pickup!

Re: Strat singles A2P Custom??

I like the Musicman/Duncan Albert Lee set in my strat. It does everything Lew described and the bridge position even does well with OD while still getting close to the "sultans of Swing" tone. when clean.

THAT is a requirement! If a set of Strat pickups can't get that Sultans of Swing tone, they ain't stayin' in my guitar!

Luke,
my favorite strat tone is with APS flats neck & mid/ Hot bridge

you might like the Custom or TwangBanger bridge more, however, from your post ... the Hot is punchy with pronounced mids

I've got to try a Hot. I just got off the phone with my Duncan rep, Harry Warman. Maybe I'll add one to my order.

Curly keeps bragging that pickup up...so it must be good!

Re: Strat singles A2P Custom??

I want the bridge tone to be thick but not icepick sharp. Shame shame on me I'm so picky...

Tonally what differences are there in the custom and hot?? They have different dc resistances but they both use a5 so I'm wondering how different they REALLY sound.

Remember I'm running with a tube recto too so that'll affect the compression of my tone as well.

My favorite overdriven strat tone is probaby Rock Me Great White. Can anyone list strat recording that these pups would sound like.

Thanks a million guys for helping me out with something I know very very little about.

The Alnico Pro II singles are so sweet. I really can't add to what everyone else has said...

Luke,
I kinda think the key is in the EQ chart, which shows the Hot with more mids. Mind you, I haven't tried the Custom - the Hot was recommended to me, I tried it, I liked it.
I have the impression from what others have said about the Custom that it's a little brighter .. I suppose one day I'll have to try one, although the Hot's been fine for me.

you'll find a few clips of my APS/ Hot set on my site (Lake Placid strat), along with separate clips of the Hot.

Exactly! :burnout:

Mr. Knopfler defines strat tone for me.

Listen to Lady Writer or Calling Elvis. The APS set can do those tones also. :newangel:
