Several companies are making these with the magnets underneath and screws instead of pole pieces and I was wondering how much they sound like P-90's. How close can you make a strat sound to a LP Jr? :laugh2:

Re: Strat Size - P-90 pickups

Well regardless of the pups, the scale, bridge and wood are so different that it's quite a challange to get a p90 LPJ sound out of a strat- I'm in the midst of a "Febson or Ginder" project and will report in soon, but the best I am hoping for is the snap of a strat with the warmth of a SG/LPG and I'm using real P90s to make sure at least that variable is covered-

As far as pups that might get you in the ball park on a strat, I'll leave it to others to recommend and looking forward to their input-
Cheers

Re: Strat Size - P-90 pickups

The Fralin SP-43 sounds alot like a P-90 and it has adjustable poles like a P-90 too. It's not going to sound identical because it's a smaller coil and uses a ceramic magnet...but it's as close as you can get in a Strat sized pickup. Lew

Re: Strat Size - P-90 pickups

Dimarzio's write up of the Virtual Vintage Solo or Solo Pro state it has more of a P-90 feel than that of either a single coil or a humbucker. Dimarzio's older pickup the SDS-1 was a really hot single coil pickup (the name is SDS-1 which seems like Super Distortion "S" (stands for strat?) even if in name only) that kinda has a P-90 ish tone.)
