Strat spring/trem question

Re: Strat spring/trem question

JB-From-Hell,
Although this would cause only a reset of spring tension (claw). I got this info from a Biography called Hot Wired Guitar, and another called Crazy Fingers, and on other called From the Heart to the Wire (I think)
These are older books, and I did watch a "Rig Rundown" on video with Bohlinger, from Premier Guitar. I have not taken the time to look them all up and Google all this stuff again, so while I have no reason to disbelieve you, I am curious where you got the info. As a huge Jeff fan, I like to think I am fairly caught up with all things gear concerning Mr. Beck.
11 is a long way from 9 in just a few short years. I do remember those numbers as if I am reading them right now, and worse,
I feel quite embarrassed as he is my favorite player.

Re: Strat spring/trem question

OK, JB- Hell,
I just copied down an interview from 2017, by Steve Prior, in Guitar.com where Steve says "He uses 9,12,17,28,38,52.
and that during the middle of a tour he might go to a 10 on top, but the rest he has been using for a long time".
I looked for an older date, like a re-print or something, but I couldn't find one.
Also on top was a shot of Beck ,with his L.Paul that I know came out of his recent Genisis Publication, from 2016, I believe.
So, Steve has been with Jeff a long time, and is where I got the info on his 2 basswood Strats and also that he only has 2 pickgaurds with the high wind single coil pickups. I think Suhr made them. I think.
I am not trying to argue, but as I am quite OCD about a few things, my "printed" voice can sound that way.

Re: Strat spring/trem question

SJ, I hear ya. I've thought many times over the years about going with lockers but never went thru with it cause I get very good stability with my floating setup and have been happy with it fir years; and I also never wanted to have to drill the headstock. But after your posts I looked up options for the first time in years and it turns out kluson has H and F ones that retrofit to my '62 and CBS type YJMs. So I'm gonna try it out. What the heck. I'm gonna take out a machine from the two different headstocks and measure the peg holes to be sure before ordering anything. As far as springs I understand your description perfectly. I always had three springs in the straight 1, 3, & 5 configuration. The CBS types have the high tension allparts springs so I float them to get a B flat on the G pull up. The '62 type oddly has those low tension black coated springs in the same configuration but I get a C on the G pull up cause they allow for a higher float. Recently I just decided to try two springs for the heck of it and it sparked my original post, but I think I'll go back to three springs. It'll take some time to get those machines in my hands but I can't wait!
I got some other questions brewing so I'm sure I'll be tapping your expertise again.
Thanks again!

Thanks, Cato,
Give it a go, you can't hurt a thing, it is ALL GOOD. I know.
