strat string change

when I change my strings on my strat I usually give about 3 and a half to 4 inches of slack on the high E string. I'm never really sure the proper amount to give on th other strings. HOw much do you guys do?

Re: strat string change

Both my guitars now have locking tuners, so slack is much less an issue now :D Before, however, I used the wrap method ESP recommends. Check it out: it's in the guitar manual they have.

Re: strat string change

I never use more than three wraps on any string, and only two on the big ones...once over the part where the string comes out of the post(Not the part you clip off, but the other side), and one or two under, then stretch them in 'til they don't go out of tune anymore. If you've done this correctly, you can then bend the extra string back and forth 'til it breaks off, and you have no end left to cut yourself on.

Here's a shot of my LP headstock...notice the distinct lack of any sharp points...

I let my 16 month old girl touch them without fear.

Re: strat string change

on a strat i give about 2 tuners length away of slack before i start winding the string... so take any string in question and take it 2 tuners past the one you are going to wrap it around and that is plenty of slack... maybe even a little too much for sure... maybe 1 1/2 tuners space away
