Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

I use 3 springs in all my trems... i have tried 5 and found that it feels really weird to me... I set most of my guitars so the trems only go down so that is a factor i guess.. I have one floating trem and it also has 3 springs.... feels great!

ok then ;) I actually have my trem flat on top with 3 springs & 10s, so not sure if that helps... I just never use the trem...

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

alright, you guys inspired me. I took both my strats out and did some setup work on them. The way I've got them set is much like GearJoneser...

I use three springs, one in the middle straight, the outer two angled towards the outside from the claw. I set the bridge flush against the body. I find that I can get some good down vibrato that way, and it usually comes back to tuning. I have to be careful though, because like Joneser said, these things are not floyds, and cannot handle severe trem usage and stay in tune. I'm contemplating a couple sets of locking tuners and getting some "nut sauce" for the nut to keep it slick.

I also thank you all for the help!

Did you miss the bro already? :)

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

In all my Strats i've ever owned, they've all been setup with 5 springs and the bridge anchored down tight against the body. To me this seems to give me a little better tone since the bridge is making the best contact with the body and providing more resonance. And also since i have a Telecaster and also play alot of country, over the years i've gotten used to resting my palm on the bridge saddles for quick palm mutes. (A floating Strat bridge is useless to me when i play this way.) So its bridge mounted flat or i can't really play it. lol
I used to have .011's on a MIM Strat i used to have, but after a while i went down to .010's and found that to be my favorite string gauge. Don't use the bar any, so the farther the trem claw is screwed down the better. :)

I'm totally loving the set-up on my Jimmy Vaughan. Christian helped me set it up floating ever so slightly, about the thickness of a quater floating. I originally did it with 3 springs, but I wasnt used to the less tension since I ahd been playing the guitar for a month and a half flat with 5 springs... so I added a 4th spring and it's been a very happy medium.

Oh I forgot... I have it set up like this... the two outside claws are connected to the two outside bridge posts... the middle post and claw is open

Curios as to how many springs you use?
All straight across..From the block to the claw
Angled...From the block to the claw
Bridge floats from the body
Bridge is flush to the body

Thanks all...John

I use 5 with the trem fixed. I take the trem arm off, as I prefer not to have to retune after using the trem.

I swear one can get better sustain with the 5 springs and fiixed.

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

I set the trm right against the body, so if I break a string it won't go out of tune. I use 11's with 4 springs.

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

On my strats, I use 3 springs straight from block to claw and have the bridge floating a little. I used 0.09's for years but have recently started using 0.10's for thicker tone.

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

I always have 5 springs set. Instant Hardtail. :fingersx:

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

I currently have 5 springs in my EJ Strat (standard config) and have considered removing at least one. I haven't yet though because I'm really enjoying the hardtail-like set up.

Hey John I did read the thread, but I saw your name wanted to say hey, and I changed my user name still working on a picture Steve

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

I'm using 10s right now, though I might try the 9-46 thing....I'm using 3 springs straight and floating the bridge a bit. Works good, though my strat's been feeling tight to me lately...weird since I'm playing my 175 with a 13 on top of 12s most the time!

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

i use 4 or 5 springs. but it's a long time since i don't use the tremolo no more, now it's fixed down

Re: Strat Users With .010s How Many Tremolo Springs Do You Use?

on my MIM, i have 5 springs, tight. Bridge flush, no bar. (pretty much a hard-tail...11 gauge

on HWY1, i have 3 springs, in the toe'd in triangle, fairly tight. Bridge is flush, with no "pitch-up" possble. Graphtech ferraglide saddles, nut and string trees keep things in tune. Mostly use the wammy for shimmers. No crazy dive bombs. Light top, heavy bottom set, but with a 11 kicking off, ending in 52. Happy!
