Strat vs. Les Paul clean tones.

Re: Strat vs. Les Paul clean tones.

As for Jeff Beck playing a Les Paul at the Grammy's, it was a tribute to Les Paul. Perhaps he rightly deemed it appropriate!

Probably so, but he did have humbuckers in there! Not even a goldtop or Custom with P90s... sort of interesting since I don't think Les ever played a '58/59 style flame top himself.

I just think Jeff Beck paying tribute to Les Paul by playing a Strat wouldn't have worked visually. I don't think he was trying to necessarily emulate Les Paul entirely down to the point of model, just 'a Les Paul' and 'not a Fender.' They were dear friends, and it may well have been a mark of respect. I doubt we'll be seeing him playing a Les Paul again in the foreseeable future. As he says,

"The Strat is such a versatile instrument it fits most situations - if it doesn't work then the problem is more likely to be a technical thing." Jeff Beck, `The Guitar Magazine' Vol 3 No 4, June 1993.

Indeed in his hands, even more versatile than it is for the rest of us!
