Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

i have 2 strats with mini humbuckers.

#1 has a jb jr in the bridge, and its good, it sounds like immortal 6's, but a little darker.

#2 has a jb jr bridge and 59 neck, and its like the les paul but its clearer. the 59 neck is really similar between the strat and lp.

my lp is an epi with a pg bridge and 59 neck. i like the 59 neck, but the pg i'm still sorting. i just went and back to backed em, they sound similar, but the strat is more defined, the LP is kinda flat sounding

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

Thanks very much for the latest posts. I should clarify that I don`t expect for my Strat to sound exactly like a LP w/ an added mini humbucker pickup, but at the same time I`d like for it have more of a LP/SG ['thicker'/different] tone than the traditional Strat sound/tone by adding a mini humbucker in the bridge position. Thanks again for everyone`s help and input.

Thanks for your post--it gives me some hope! Pardon my ignorance--who/what is 'immortal 6'? Thanks again for your help.

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

Ah! Very cool! Thanks! And thank you 'Immortal Six'--nice sounding mini HB and nice playing too!

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

PATB-3 will sound like a PATB-3 in a strat
Nothing can make strat sound like LP! Nothing can make LP sound like strat...

You need a real full size HB for ZZ-top crunch in a strat.
JB TB-4, HSS strat wiring diagram-1vol 1tone 5way ,works great in my alder-RW strat for ZZ-top, acdc, the cult...
JB works great with alder and 250K volume and tone pots.

That is funny, a PATB-3 in my Jackson soloist can get a very convincing LP tone. If you were not looking and didnt know better, you would not know the difference. Its that good. IN a strat the results are very good too.

Though, a JB in a strat is very good, it aint even close to what he is asking for.

As others have said, it´s not really possible becasue of the differing construction. BUT..

If you want to stay with single coil size, the Hot rails will tonally get you as close to the thickness of a Les Paul as it can get in that size. Unfortunately, it´s not even remotely low output, it will eat quite a few fullsize humbuckers up... and that conversely causes a bit of a problem in getting vintage tones, as tonally it´s close to an Invader which is generally speaking a very heavy pickup.

Ooh, that gives me agood idea for a Custom shop pu.. a Hotrails with screw poles.... should allow it to be backed off real far to lover teh output and increase fatness and keep transparency

And thus it stops being a Hot Rail

It seems many folks are under the impression he wants the identical LP/SG shorter-scale/different wood tone out of a Strat, rather than "not as thin/wimpy as a single coil".

Get the Lil59, LilSD, or go Custom Shop for a CustomJr (Custom specs in a Jr format). That one's nice and dark.

Hmm...I take ti you have a custom jr? If so, tell us more.

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

I won't recommend a pickup for you to choose, others have done that.
Whatever you DO go for though, I'd suggest putting a coil split into the wiring so you can still get those nice honky notch tones. Easy mod, well worth the small amount of expense and effort in a guitar like a strat.

Re: Strat w/ a 'humbucker' question

Christopher Caruana is right and everyone else to nothing is going to sound like an LP but different. Evh sound is what i am trying to get close to because its not a 100% strat or LP and that's what makes it even better. sometimes i want it to sound more like a strat and sometimes more like an LP, but i think EVH did it best because he really got his own sound from the guitar. i have a 57 strat and i cut and installed a JB in the bridge, it sounds cool but not like an LP. The best is to find a pickup that makes your guitar have its own special tone that works with your style. I like the LP but i have a hard time with the feel of the guitar, strats feel better to me, although i can't seem to find a tone i like better then evh's tone.

Yes you are exactly right!

I would like for it to 'not sound thin/wimpy as a single coil'!

Thanks for explaining it a simple manner!

And "thank you" to everyone for your help and input--very much appreciated by me.
