I better just clear this up for a few people who are a little unclear on the gutiar I'm working on here.
It has a single humbucker... and nothing else. It's not an HSS, it's just an H.
Therefore the Blues Trembucker might not be enough of what I'm looking for...
Anyway, that'll help people give more advice, so have at it.

In that case just go with whatever your favorite bridge humbucker is. I think I'd order a '78 from MJ at the Duncan Custom Shop. I have a 59 TB in two of Strats, but I'm going to replace the humbucker in my single pickup Strat with a '78 Trembucker someday. There's lots of great choices for a single humbucker Strat...59, Screamin Demon, Custom, Custom Custom, Distortion, JB, etc.

What do your guitar heroes use?

Lew, Thanks a lot for all your help. My heros....
Dave Mustaine = Seymour Duncan JB
Jim Root = EMG 81
Dimebag Darrell = Seymour Duncan Dimebucker
Kurt Cobain = I have no idea
Bruce Kulick = Seymour Duncan JB
Randy Rhoads = Seymour Duncan Distortion

I will consider these things and I will seriously look into the '78 Trembucker

KC Used, IIRC, (mostly) a Super Distortion/PAF loaded Jaguar on both "Nevermind" and "In Utero". He Switched to using JB's right before the In Utero tour started.

RR Used, IIRC, stock Gibsons on his Les Pauls and his Polka Dot V had a Super Distortion in the bridge. Think "Suicide Solution". Even though his sig Jackson comes with a DD I don't think he ever used one on any of the studio albums.

Thank you gOgIver, what does IIRC mean?

So, with the push/pull pot can I split the dime for a more "single coil" sound?
Yup. I haven't tried it, so I can't attest to the quality of the split tone, but it is wired 4-conductor.

Most importantly, it looks cool :D

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

I love a JB in a super Strat like that, but it would have to have a tone knob. My old Strat was similar. I think the JB needs some taming sometimes, but not always.

I think I'd probably go with a trem CC. With nothing but a volume and a miniswitch to split it, you'll want something that has no icepick. The CC is fat and has the kind of mids that will fill out a strat. With singles, it overpowers and is too dense, but in a single hum guitar, I think it'd be cool.

A Strat with a single humbucker might be a cool place to try my "blend-a-split" mod:

blend-a-split.jpg

Fade from one split coil to the other. ;)

Note: Spin-a-split is Seymour Duncan's idea. I just expanded it to include both coils.

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

The Dime sounds killer when split, though not quite single coil-ish sounding (jangly, chimey), still sounds loud and clear. I'd love to rip this pup in half and drop it into my strat because it wouldn't sound like any other single coil pup that I've ever heard.

Good luck!

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

I have used the following in a humbucker strat, Invader, C5, CC....and without a doubt the CC owned. Thickened it up nicely, exellent musical tone from that A2 magnet. The C5 will be too scooped and will make it sound a lot thinner than a CC. Some like the JB, but IMO it's way too trebly in a strat. Try the CC, you won't be sorry.

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

I'm with JB from hell on this one; Get the Dime, dude.

It will just rip in that guitar, and it should give you some pretty cool tones when you split it.

Ok, I'm buying a strat from Xssive, it will have a single humbucker and a single volume knob. I plan to install a push/pull voume knob so I can split the coils of the humbucker for 2 different unique sounds.
21 frets - maple neck - rosewood fretboard - alder body
So, which pick-up do you think I should go with.

will be playing hard rock, metal, etc... standard and drop D tuning.
Fender M-80 Solid State Half-Stack

I recommened the Duncan Custom Custom.

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

Demon with the allen pole pieces swapped out for another row of flathead screw poles.

Re: Strat w/ Single Humbucker - Which One?

Just so nobody else suggests a pick-up, I'll let everyone know that the guitar now has a Gibson '57 classic, since it has a single wire there's no split, but it sounds great.
