Strat wiring Idea

Welp, I think it is a pretty proven fact the strat is the most versitile guitar out there. For us who just play for fun, has anybody ever thought of a way to just have one guitar then have several loaded pickguards ready to go that connect to an output jack with clip connecter.(Like the white ones used often with car stereos)

Rather than having to bust out the solder gun.........

Re: Strat wiring Idea

haha whammy bar all the way to the guitar will relieve string tension enough to easily remove the pickguard

Just wondering if this was possible and still sound good.

Re: Strat wiring Idea

Would work assuming your bridge ground went to the output jack and not the back of a pot. That would only require one quick connect.

Sure it's possible, but I find more satisfaction in having multiple guitars. ;)

haha it sucks when you cant afford more guitars. I probably would never even attempt this but thought it was an interesting Idea.

This guitar will be a perfect compliment to Lynch Box, maybe steve jobs should look into it.

Well, in that case I might suggest a vintage 8-hole guard over a modern 11-hole.

But by the time you buy the pickguard, all the pickups, pots, switches, knobs, etc... you could have spent a MIM Standard strat depending on the pickups you buy. ;)

Re: Strat wiring Idea

Already did this by routing out the side of a cheap strat body, adjacent to the pot cavity and fitting up different pickguards with different selection of pups, same tone controls and capacitors, 2 jacks, and one 5-way switch.

The jacks are wired with one going to the amp and the other going to the normal stratocaster jack, which is now wired up only to the bridge (String Ground)

Then you use a short right angle jack to plug into the extra jack and go to the normal jack - thus completing your string ground and the other jack (On the pickguard) goes to the amp.

I used the 11 screw setup pick guard and it would have been eisier using less screws. The whole assembly slides out the routed out side of the body.

The benefit of this setup is that you are using the same guitar body, neck, bridge, tuning machines, strings, setup, and amp - and can check out which pup combination works best for you.

I settled in on Seymour Duncans and Fralins

Re: Strat wiring Idea

I've got my FrankenStrat set up this way. So far, I have 4 pickguards loaded up - One with a JB-SC-Jazz combo, one with Jimmie Vaughn type wired Strat pickups, one with an old Super Distortion & Lawrence pickups (my vintage '70s pickups for the old days), & a EMG DG set.

I'm using threaded inserts & stainless steel machine screws to fasten the pickguards. It's got Planet Waves locking tuners, so I can unlock the strings, swap out the guard, & reuse the same set of strings.

I use standard in-line mini plugs to connect the guards (a stereo one for the EMGs). Works like a charm. I'm currently re-painting it. I didn't think anyone else would be interested in this modular approach.
