Re: Stratocaster Neck Single Coil vs Telecaster Neck singlecoil

i find a lighter wind works best for strat pups in single cutaway hardtails, say 5.8k to 6k rather than 6.4k to 6.6k for a single trem cutaway guitar

I agree. I've got a Fralin Strat pickup in the neck of my Fender Tele Custom and it's slightly underwound to just under 6K. I have a CS Jerry Donahue in the bridge position. They're great together.

I think Tele neck pickups, especially those with covers, sound muffled and small compared to a Strat neck pickup and just don't sound as good as a good Strat neck pickup.

There's some Tele neck pickups that sound pretty good, like the Fralin Blues Special Tele neck and Antiquity Tele neck but I'll rake a Strat neck pickup over even the best Tele neck pickups I've owned.

I have yet to meet a Tele neck pickup that I was ever really happy with. That's why all of my Telecasters now sport humbuckers in the neck position.

I have a BG pups Tele Rockwind alnico III set installed in my #1 build. The covered tele neck is as vintagey sweet as the bridge is vintagey hot. Actually I have 2 of these sets, but only 1 installed. I was selling the extra set, but there was no interest so I'm keeping it for a future build

Same here... They always seem dull and muffled to me.

Tele neck pickups are surprisingly warm. I have a friend who plays in a 25 piece Jazz band and he uses a Tele for a nice warm Jazzy tone. For me though I prefer the neck pickup of a Strat. I am a blues blues-rock kind of player and the Strat just works. Bit better for me but I do have both.

I have a California Tele that I bought maybe 15 years ago. It has a Fender Tex Mex Strat pickup in the neck and a Tex Mex Tele pickup in the bridge. I used it goe slide a lot a few years ago but now I use it for more stuff. It's a great founding guitar and I love the tone of a Strst pickup in the neck

Re: Stratocaster Neck Single Coil vs Telecaster Neck singlecoil

One of the best rhythm tones on a regular Tele is the neck and bridge combined. I play most of my chords with that setting when I'm using a regular Tele. And that setting does change when you use a Strat pickup instead. One reason to go for an underwound Strat neck pickup: helps retain that particular tone.

Re: Stratocaster Neck Single Coil vs Telecaster Neck singlecoil

I prefer the Strat neck pickup. It's a light and delicate tone by comparison. I sometimes find when you set an amp up to play to the strengths of a Tele bridge pickup, the neck loses something. I don't have that problem with Strats.

I do have a Telecaster which has just had a humbucker fitted in the neck, but I haven't played it yet; I won't be collecting it til Monday.

Re: Stratocaster Neck Single Coil vs Telecaster Neck singlecoil

The Tele neck pickup seems more like a "mix-in" thing that you use together with the bridge pickup.

Ditto. In fact, I've always thought that the perfect Tele wiring would be a toggle to turn the neck on and off, with the bridge hard-wired on.

That's why all of my Telecasters now sport humbuckers in the neck position.

Double ditto. Which sounds great, btw.

Eureka! The exact reverse of Leo's original "Blend" control circuit from the earliest Blackguard Fender electric guitars. :)

Hmmm . . . I'd like to see that. I'll have to "google" that one.

dimarzio twang king neck tele pickup. I had it in a strat i sold. Just awesome with a 500k volume, no tone control.

Re: Stratocaster Neck Single Coil vs Telecaster Neck singlecoil

1) To me, a strat neck pickup is deep and clear. The Tele neck seems more muffled. These are just generalities as tone will vary with different makes & models.

2) The tele neck isn't quite as long as a strat pickup. The metal cover does affect the highs in my experience.

3) I currently have a surfer strat neck pickup in my telecaster and I LOVE it. I actually use the neck pickup now!

I’m very keen on the surfer strat on the Tele neck PU;
Does the surfer Strat pickup withoutcover fit in a telecaster neck pickguard or I need to build a custom one?

Many thanks

Doesn't fit. You'd need a custom pickguard.
