Strats and humbuckers

Myself included, what is it about a Strat that seems to make it so hard for each of us to find a humbucker we like in a Strat? Is it the pot issue 500k vs 250? The wood(Ash and Alder)? The Scale length? I just noticed it's a common topic. It seems to be debated a lot and at least apears that a PAF type humbucker is the way to go for your classic rock tones. I have two Strats(Pearly Gates in the bridge of both) and love them, but thought maybe we could discuss it from another perspective. What is it about the design of the Stratocaster that seems to make it difficult to choose a humbucker?

Re: Strats and humbuckers

It's because people stuff the humbuckers they liked in short-scale fixed bridge guitars into a long-scale guitar with a sustain block tremolo. The latter absolutely requires rethinking and starting all your experimentation from scratch. Just for example the Jazz neck really wakes up with a trem block. It just clicks like fog pulled off.

A hardtail Strat doesn't make it much better since neck humbuckers become way too bommy now, unless you reposition them closer to the bridge.

Re: Strats and humbuckers

what ever humbucker i put in my strat they all sound "straty" anyway, not in a bad way. you just have to remember a pickup that sounds amazing in a lp wont sound the same in a strat, and vice versa.

Re: Strats and humbuckers

Along those same lines, the mid-boost, like in the Eric Clapton Strat is another really good tool for tweaking at Strat. I have never tried it with a humbucker though. Anyone tried that?

I have never tried the TBX idea.

Most Strats aren't mahogany with a maple top either, which I think plays a role in the tone game.

Re: Strats and humbuckers

I'll take the same HB pups as Jimmy Herring has in one of his Strats…whether it was in ABB, Dead or Panic.

I've had good results with the PG, PG+, all three Customs, the Lawrence L465, DMZ Tone Zone, and DMZ Air Classic.
