Let me start out by explaining what happened,
OK normally i use fender XL-150 becuase they are pure nickle strings.
anyway i am at the store and they have the d'addario's 3 pack for $9.99 so i fugure hey joe satriani uses these and so does a lot of other guys let me give em a go. they are inexpensive and may be real good and i can change my strings more often
so i buy the 3 pack and get home put a set on, :smack: first off the sound VERY clanky, thin?
secondly there is a overtone, like a chirp on the open A and B strings?
so i figure i never had this problem before so its the pack it had to be a bad pack right? WRONG! :saeek:
took off the brand new set put on the second brand new set and the same results! :poed: :poed: :poed:
two bad packs in a row?
so now i am furious and put on the last of the 3 pack, guess what?
thats right same problems :damnit:
OK now i am starting to BLAME my guitar, i run out to the music store and buy ONE set of my normal brand fender XL 150's put them on and all is well :bigthumb:
you mean to tell me that the d'addario's are that bad? how does guys like satch use them?
please someone else here tell me they have had a NIGHTMARE with d'addario's?
:smack:

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

Well, I use GHS super steels so, if you thought what you had was clanky ... :laugh2: Did you give the string time to play in ...seriously. A lot of strings sound a bit odd when first put on (I know you know this , I'm talking about the hyrid alloy's) ... If you're used to using pure nickel wraps then yeah the strings like GHS boomers and super steels, or what have you brand wise do tend to sound just not *right* at first. Can't explain why a plain string like the *B* would sound different unless maybe you used Cryogenic treated strings. D'addario's are normally good strings, but it's all personal taste, I know a guy who swears by Blue Steels, says they last forever, man, they go dead quick with me, and I didn't particluarly care for the tone ... all personal taste.

I played on the first pack for a few hours before going to the second?
the thing is that every pack of the fenders i ever put on was warm and non clanking from the get go? I used them for years because they seemed to be one of the few that had a warm tone when first put on? they have a played in sound i like and no over tone probs or whatever probs like the D'darrios?
the d'addarios really sounded bad and made my BOGNER UBER amp sound off
:saeek:
I mean it is obvious the d'addarios will never be on my guitars again but i am still puzzled about them?

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

I don't like D'Addarios for that reason. I almost always use Ernie Ball slinkys. The D's feel brittle and bright, kind of what you were explaining. The Ernie Balls just feel good under the fingers too. Try those out if you want a good inexpensive string.

I have tried EB before and they were fine. i used to use the 5150 pack because of the gauge 9-40 and they were pure nickle, they stopped makin em so i went to fenders pure nickle, i may try the EB rock n roll pack which is pure nickle but has a 9-42 gauge

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

I used to use GHS Boomers. The store was out, so I tried some D'Addarios. I thought they sounded clanky. I then went back and the store recommended DR Tite-fits. I've been using the DR's ever since.

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

d addario sucksssssss!!!! it lives less time than other strings (sometimes 1/2!!!).For +- the same price i play with DR and i m very happy with it

you know it is funny cause i originally tried these for the cash savings but you and other have told me that they last for crap?
so even if i had no technical probs i still would have been better off stickin to my normal brand :smack:
I want to give the DR's a go as well as elixers? but am sceptical now after the D' adreadio experience :laugh2:

Ditto.

I've been using EB power slinkys (.011 to .048) for years. Some people complain that they're a little dull sounding, but I kinda like that.

Anyone try those Beefy Slinkys (.011 to .054) or Not Even Slinkys (.012 to .056) out yet?

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

I use D'Addario's exclusively, and absolutely love them. To be honest, I've had the same set of D'Addario strings on my guitar for about 8 months now, and havent had 1 break. There's a shop I buy them from, (12-52 Jazz Lights w/ wound G)$5.25 per pack, and I like them over any other brands I've tried. I dont find them bright and clunky at all (and the music I play is far from being bright:))
IMHO, they stay in tune, have a great feel and tone, and last forever.

To each their own I guess.

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

OK this is really not a who likes em who dont,i would like someone if they can explain what the heck was wrong with em? all three packs had the same problems and it was not the guitar trust me :yell:

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

one more symptom i left out, when playing a stock A bar chord at the 2nd fret
the open A wavered like mad making it out of tune then if i tuned it as best i could
the rest of the bar chords up higher were out :yell: :yell: :yell:

The intonation on your guitar is out when using those strings.

Same here, I've been useing D'Addario's for 20 years Never a problem?

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

I had some problems with the Daddarios as well, they seemd to fall off quickly and just didnt last that long. I know its a matter of personal taste so I started to shop around for what I perfered and DR blacks work for me and they seem to have a good long life.

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

i have used dadario exl-130 (8-38) for years and never liked the sound, but loved the feel LOL .. silly me.. sounded thin, no definition, sucky.. upraded to exl-120's (9-42) sounds much much better d'oh =P never had any other problems with them. they+ve got a good tension and feel kind of silky (do you perhaps know which set of dadarios satch is using?)

i'm thinking of getting me some earnie ball hybrids.. if i can find em

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

Same thing here...never like those strings, I tried one set and ended up taking them off the next day. From my experience, the Fender strings feel nice for a short time, but they don't last very long at all, and neither do Ernie Ball strings. If you like pure nickel strings, try a set of DR Pure Blues or Gibson Vintage Reissue. They cost about $2 more per pack than the Fender strings, but they easily last twice as long.

Re: STRING NIGHTMARE! d'addarios!

I know my ernie ball skinny top hevay bottoms strings sounds a ltitle odd when i first put them on, but once i stretch them out and play for maybe an hour or so they sound fine to me. I dunno about the D's but i have a set rightnow on my acoustics cuz the store ran out of ernieballs and they seem ok to me, but i dunno about electrics.
