Re: String Theory

Dorado - do you break strings on all of your guitars or one in particular? I used to break strings on my MIM Strat all the time until I got Graph Tec saddles. May have broken one since then. Just a thought.

FWIW Elixirs are great for my Taylor acoustic, but I just don't like the tone or the feel on an electric guitar. Also, EB's went dead in a week at most for me too... d'Addario strings work for me on electrics, but I want to try out some other brands.

Re: String Theory

well I have a pair of nanowebs on my guitar right now, they are a little too slippery feeling, like someone put crisco on my fretboard. they are lasting quite a while i must say, but the only reason that i haven't changed them yet is because i want to get the most i can out of my $15 a pack strings.

As for the EBs, I was using the largest set that my local store carries.

DR and D'addario seems to be winning so far. I don't really use these strings, are there any that are recommended from these companies?

Re: String Theory

What the heck is that rectangular thing on the right of the picture in your signature?

Why do people seem to take so much pride in being heavy handed, hitting the strings hard and using ridiculously heavy strings/picks? Sounds like an accelerated vicious cycle of having to change strings. Rhetorical question, maybe.

i believe its closely related to the big truck = over compensation theory.

Mainly on my string through body hardtails, my tuneomatics don't do it as much. It's normally always the wind on the 38 and 28 strings that snaps right up near the bridge. I have thought about going the graphtech route, but just haven't brough myself to do it yet. I have a few theories, one is that I rest my palm on the bridge a lot of the time and I am thinking that I hit the string in the same place an awful lot of the time and maybe weaken it overtime. Maybe a hand or pick position change would help, but 10 yrs in, that's not really something that overly eager to do.:)

Re: String Theory

DR Red Devils are the kings of coated strings!I love em...sounds cool ,nice harmonics ,lasts for 6 months for me (i normally change every 3 weeks)

Re: String Theory

I must be a blithering idiot , I actually hate the sound of a fresh set of strings, after they are about a week old they calm down abit. If you want to keep that crisp twangy spangy sound of new strings use Fast Fret on em, I quit using it because it made my strings sound "new " for too long.

boomers and earnie ball are the way to go!

Re: String Theory

What is the "changing of strings" you speak of? Are not all strings supposed to be a dingy silver with Cheetos stains on them?

But seriously every 3 weeks? I can see if you're in a serious band, otherwise I couldn't imagine doing that.

I tried Elixir acoustic strings, fricken hate them. Sound very dull.

Re: String Theory

I was playing some different strings lately, and I have been noticing that I really like the sound of EBall and GHS boomers, but they fade really fast.
I find the longer lasting strings like blue steels (my current comprimise) have a duller tone to begin with, but they last for months.

Interesting...

I've found that Blue Steels are the brightest of 'em all... stainless stell. They last a hella long time too...WAAAAY longer then any nickle string set.

Right now I'm an EB man...found I had tuning problems with GHS unless I changed 'em all the time. Seems like every few years I switch between EB & D'Addario...I still try random stuff all the time though... haven't tried DR guitar strings yet. Dunno why. I like their Lo-Rider bass strings a whole bunch...

Re: String Theory

I play Ernie Ball and have forever it seems, I think they last a long time.
I play the super slinky pink and the heavy yellow for the drop tuned guitas.
I have currently been playing around with some GHS boomers and Daddarios I don't like them very much at all.
Back to the balls I go.
