I think the stop tail would lessen the angle that the strings are going over the saddles, so there would be less chance of breaking a string, but there would also be less string tension. usually you find string thru's on guitars that aren't 24 3/4 scale LP, i think? I know the Dave mustaine ESP signature is like that, and the bridge is recessed into the body.
