Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Ok so my buddies and I are in a debate about this one and I wanna hear what you guys think.

Which way do you floyd users string it and why? And did you hear if one way is better than the other? More/Less stable? More/Less string breakage? Or no difference at all? And is any way easier?

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I've done both, and I haven't noticed much difference. Ball end at the tuners is a little faster, and I think the strings often settle in faster. Plain ends at the tuners look better.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I used to thread the strings backwards (ball end at tuner) when I owned a floyded guitar. I liked it better

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Depends on the brand of string. DRs the way they are made I think you have to snip the ball end and put it in the bridge. Any other brand it does not matter. Me I prefer to clip the ball ends and put it in the right way.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

never tried the balls to tuners, always seemed like a hassle, maybe i'll check it out.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I don't like doing the ball ends at the tuners, but it's all just personal preference.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I've seen the ball ends put dents in the tuners. Maybe it is cheap tuners, or very strong ball ends, but I have seen it on a few guitars.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Always did ball ends at the tuners. Faster, easier, no poked fingers, looks alright.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I've never done this, ever. Do you guys run the ball all the way into the tuner and then just cut the other end off to fit? Do you wrap it at the tuner at all? Just seems weird, but I might try it sometime.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I never put the ball ends at the tuners. If you've seen as many sets of West German Schallers thrashed because of 80's idiots feeding the ball end all the way into the tuner post, you wouldn't either. It eventually causes sharp spots on your tuner post and causes breakage issues on all of the strings no matter how you wind them.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Done both, didn't see a difference.
For the couple extra seconds it takes to snip both ends I just prefer doing it "the correct way".

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I have a Deluxe Plus Strat from the 90's with a single locking trem and locking tuners. I used to string it backward but NOT trim the string end, leaving the balls on an ~8in length bouncing around... Just to be goofy. I think Tom Morello did it and I copied. Or maybe I was just a goofball.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Ibanez Edge Pro trem means I don't even have to clip the ball ends off to put them in the bridge anyway :D

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Never done the ball end at tuners. I just think it's ugly.

Clip em off and clamp em down!

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

Never done the ball at the end, for aesthetic reasons.

I often snip quite a lot of the string away, as I don't like my tuners on the headstock having any more than 2 winds. Any more just looks cluttered.

I change strings often for performances and haven't really noticed any negative things about doing this. I always make sure to stretch the strings well before locking the nut, so they don't slip out of tune for any reason.

Re: Stringing a floyd rose: Ball end at the tuners?

I have never had any damage to the tuners. I end up with approximately 1.5 turns on the posts when it is all said and dun. Who knows maybe these 30+ year old Goto's are ROCK PROOF! Oh...man were they ever cheap too, Hee hee. Wish I had gotten more of them. They are the old minis with the octagon shaped housing
