Strings vibrating

This is on ibanez stagestar....the strings are vibrating against the first fret on the neck and they do it no matter how high I adjust the bridge and no matter how lightly I strum.

What causes this and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks

Re: Strings vibrating

Okay, how do I shim the nut?
I know you gotta take it out and put something underneath it, bt how do I get it out without breaking it and what do I use?

Thanks

Re: Strings vibrating

I figured it out. It wasn't the strings vibrating. It was the tuning things vibrating because I only have two strings on right now. (Waiting to put on my new ones!)

Re: Strings vibrating

There won't be enough tension on the neck when you have strings missing. There's no point worrying about action and buzz until you have all the strings tuned and intonated.

:smack:

That will do it. For future reference, there's little point in evaluating (or trying to adjust) a guitar that doesn't have a full set of strings that are properly tuned. The neck will be under much less tension when it isn't fully dressed.

And if you hear a buzz, always check for loose hardware before you get into any heavy surgery. (Especially in the bridge.)

Re: Strings vibrating

K guys got it. Thanks for the help. Hope learning to play isn't to hard.
So far all I can play (Not very good though) is the first part of the intro to rock you like a hurricane

Sweet dude! Keep at it. We all started somewhere.

I think the first thing I learned was the main riff in "Whole Lotta Love"

Re: Strings vibrating

"Smoke on the Water" was my first one. I probably haven't played it since that week :laugh2:

Re: Strings vibrating

Yeah its fun so far. I like working on stuff so I figure I'm going to be better at tuning and adjusting rather than playing...lol

Re: Strings vibrating

Definitely pay someone who knows what they're doing to teach you. Learning by ear is fun and all, but if I had the last 25 years to do over again, knowing what I know now, I'd scrounge up the cash to pay for lessons, at least to get me started.

However, spending the summer of '86 with We Sold Our Soul For Rock-N-Roll, Number Of The Beast, Point Of Entry, British Steel, Shout At The Devil, Moving Pictures, and You Can't Stop Rock And Roll, wasn't a total waste.

Also buy the Guitar magazines. If not for the songs, for the lessons. And follow them.
Don't trust all the internet tabs you find - half those jokers wouldn't know an F# from their ass.

And for the luvva mike, avoid anything with the name Mel Bay on it.

Re: Strings vibrating

K man got it. Gonna plug it in today for the first time so I'm going to see if I like it.
If I decide i do then I will consider lessons.

Welcome to the Forum.... it's a pretty cool spot. hang listen, learn. We all do!

How old are you & how long have you been playing? Are you taking lessons? What kind of guitar/amp are you playing? Curious minds need to know!

Re: Strings vibrating

I'm not old enought to drive quite yet. Peavey rage 152, ibanez stagestar.
Just started playing, not taking lessons, just like to jam.

Re: Strings vibrating

Find a good teacher. Its a good way to go. You will improve 10X faster then if you try to stumble around in the dark by yourself!

Re: Strings vibrating

It's funny, when I first read the title I thought..."Yeah, of course, they're supposed to...if the strings don't vibrate you get no sound".
