Strings

Re: Strings

I'm only picky about 3 things when it comes to strings:

-Gauge. This is obvious I guess. Who wouldn't?

-Material. Nickel or Nickel wound, no Steel strings for me. They sound too harsh and eat frets alive. I mostly use Nickel wounds, and will try some pure Nickels soon. Pure nickels are a bit easier to play too, aren't they?

-Strings not being Fender. I don't care about brands mostly, but Fender strings have always been horrible to me for some reason so I steer away from them. I usually end up with D'Addarios because they're cheap and reliable. :)

eat frets alive??!

i use Alice Stainless Steels 9-42 and they're pretty reliable. i've tried Daddarios and they break quickly compared to the Alice. can the stainless steels really destroy my frets? i never knew about that. maybe i should switch to pure nickels??

Re: Strings

I'm pretty fussy about strings. Some strings sound very different to me depending on their composition. Also, I've found that some strings have a shorter life span than others...... IMO, good strings are the cheapest way to improve your sound.

THIS

Strings make a significant diff in tone. And no two string brands sound alike IME.

Prefer the tone & feel of DR Tite Fits the most (CLEAR-but not bright or thin) but I've had bad luck with them as far as intonation/tuning stability.

I'm always experimenting to find the best strings for a particular guitar, but generally Dean Markley Nickel Steels are what I end up with.

SS strings will be harder, so they'll wear the frets more than NS strings will.

Similarly, SS frets won't wear down as fast as normal ones, but you'll go through strings faster.

Re: Strings

D'Addario or Ernie Ball. I use whatever gauge seems to sound best with that guitar.

10-46 for the R9 Historic
10-46 for the LP Special single-cut (P90's)
11-49 for the 355
11-52 for the LP Std
9.5-42 for the Squier Tele
11.5-54 for the Strat
