strings?

ok i just got a new acoustic, nothing special but old and free. i never had one before and am curious as to what kinda strings to put on. it has a string thru bridge so i wont have to worry bout pegs but currently i put dunlop 11 or 10s on my electrics need advice on what to use on the acoustic.

Re: strings?

If you're mainly going to play rhythm (and not bend too much) then Medium gauge (13-53s) will feel a lot like 11s in terms of resistance. If you're planning on playing electric style lead, then look at Light sets (usually with an 11 on high E)

I play D'Addario on both electric and acoustic, 11-49 electric, and 13-53 acoustic and I can bend the acoustic strings enough for lead work (but have Popeye forearms).

Re: strings?

What type of acoustic? Jumbo, Dreadnought, Parlor, etc.?

What tone woods?

What is the main style you will be using it for, Fingerstyle, Strumming? Flamenco, etc.?

Edit: I really like D'Addario Strings, use Phosphorous-Bronze for my Dreadnoughts. If you are just getting into acoustics then you may want to try a set of Elixirs...they sound and feel great (from my experience they wear out too quickly but that is just me.)

Re: strings?

I third the suggestion for D'ADdario Phosphor Bronze, they really lend a complexity to cheaper acoustics.

See if you can find the original specs for the string gauge or tension it shipped with. 13's are great on dreads and jumbos designed for them, but on a 000 sized or smaller acoustic they may do damage. Check to be sure. Also, an appropriate setup, getting the relief, nut and saddle height correct will get an acoustic playing great with heavier strings.

Enjoy the guitar!

Re: strings?

I wouldn't put medium strings on an old guitar unless I knew its history. With over 180 lbs. of tension, a medium set could be catastrophic. Best to have it inspected by a knowleable luthier, if it's a guitar you want to keep for a while.

As written above, the size of the guitar's body and it's scale-length are important factors in choosing strings, as is your playing style. I mostly flat-pick, and I strum hard to accompany my voice. I play dreadnoughts, so the medium strings drive the top for maximum volume...which is less important on a guitar with a pickup.

I'm a big fan of both Martin and D'Addario strings, and I usually prefer phosphor bronze. Most of my Martin dreadnoughts use medium gauge, but I have one Ibanez that I string wih lights and two that use D'Addario's hybrid Bluegrass gauge. Coated strings can be very good, and I use the EXP and Martin's Lifespan SP sets. (Due to their higher tension, I avoid Elixir strings.) My advice would be to use regular uncoated strings until you've settled on a brand, gauge and alloy that you like...and then decide if coated strings are right for you.

And it's a good idea to keep you guitar properly hydrated. Taylor has an excellent white paper on humidity at their website. Keeping your guitar in the right range of humidity will help it last longer and sounding great.

Enjoy!
