Stripped Finish Les Paul Custom

As you might be able to make out, in my Avatar my 1981 Gibson Les Paul Custom has a stripped finish on the maple top. I bought it like this second-hand. Does anyone know if theres any tonal reasons why someone would do this, apart from looking quite cool and a bit unique. I think Mick Ronson also did this on his custom.

A lot of people believe that no finnish helps tone... the finnish sometimes if thick can stop the wood from vidrating

That guitar has absolutly no finish? Not even a bit of wax? Doesn't that cause damage to the wood and make it more sucsecptible (sp please) to changes in the environment?

Since I'm considering buying a guitar which will later on be stripped to make it a natural finish (I hate honey colour) it would be nice to know if it could handle being naked.

The Beatles, John and George did that to there Epiphone Sheratons and
liked the way they sounded. Maybe it allows the wood to breath and be
more resonate?

Ah the light finish makes sense, kinda like a "unfinished" neck.

A friend of mine with a les paul (not a custom, but a standard) with the same p'ups, said that mine sounded more shimmery in the high end, but that could be a combo of different things, new nut, new bridge and tailpiece or electronics etc. Although it definatley sounds different to his acoustically, but don't all guitars. I haven't noticed any damage due to changes in the environment, but i do live in england so there isn't much environmental change anyway. Still is a kickass guitar though. The first thing people say is, "Oh, i like that colour, what finish is that"

I stripped the finish off my 70 dollar mandolin, and it really opened the thing up, but then again, it was friggin covered in poly 1/8'th of an inch. The poor thing couldnt breath.
