stripped mounting screw hole

I bought a pu off auction and it came with a stripped out mounting screw hole. I don't wanna make bigger holes in my pickguard to accomodate a larger screw and i don't have access to tap and dies that small. Does anyone know where i could get one of them slip on clips with the threaded hole in it? Or maybe changing the back plate is easier than it looks? anyone know the size threading and pitch the mounting screws are offhand. thanks

Not too sure what you´re talking about....

Assuming it´s a traditional type PU with a separate metal baseplate, that´s probably the easiest solution

Varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, sorry....

Re: stripped mounting screw hole

Something that might work (I've done this with stripped holes on computer cases and on other things) is to take a flat-nosed punch and a hammer and squash the tab where the hole is. As it flattens the tab, the diameter of the hole should get smaller. Then file or grind the end of the height adjustment screw so you can get it into the hole and use the threads of the screw to rethread the hole.

With a little patience and a little luck it can work.

If that doesn't work (and it sounds like it should), the trick I've used is to fill the hole with crazy glue, let it dry for a day, then drill a new hole smaller than the mounting screw. Then self-thread the mounting screw through the new hole.

I wonder if you could do the same thing with JB Weld? I've had really good success with this product, doing similar things.

Re: stripped mounting screw hole

JB Weld is one of those magical wonders of modern chemistry - steel paste in a tube (like toothpaste). Just squeeze it out and let it harden. It's pretty strong, too. You can get it in hardware and auto parts stores.

Re: stripped mounting screw hole

I was gonna say use some solder! But I guess the JB Weld suggestion is better.

Hey, anything with JB in the name CAN´T be that bad for repairing Pickups :D

Would of course be so much better a joke if the PU in question was in actuality a JB :laugh2:

Re: stripped mounting screw hole

I've heard of people gluing a nut under the stripped out hole. Duncan pup height screws are #3-48 I think.

I have done this before also (can't remember the size of the nut though) but I used soder as I didn't trust myself with glue. The soder theroy by itself works also but make sure you do it on the bottom side of the pickup's tabs not on top as it will effect the way the pickup springs sit on the tabs making the pup tilt either to the bridge or to the neck.
