Stripped screw preventing tube change.

The tubes in my ycv80 have never been changed to my knowledge...but the plate covering the 3 12AX7 sockets is secured by 5 screws and when I get to the last one I notice it is a little mangled on the screw head. It wont budge and just when it seems to wanna start turning the wear on the screw head causes the driver to slip...

tried to slide the plate off to the side leaving the screw in place but the plate is L shaped with other end going up into the 12AX7 sockets peventing that.

Normally I would just leave what i guess is Sovtek 12AX7WA's in there. But they have become noisey and microphonic...

I have a new set of EHX tubes for the preamp section here. and this one screw is really making me mad...

what to do? I have backed off so i don't damage the screw head further.

Help would be apprecciated...

Re: Stripped screw preventing tube change.

Do you have the room to cut a straight slot in the screw head?

Re: Stripped screw preventing tube change.

yeah but i would prob end up marring the chassis...

Just cover everything that might be in the way with a couple of layers of tape, and slowly cut a slot deep enough to get a flathead driver in there.

Re: Stripped screw preventing tube change.

LoFi, can you post a well lit (outdoors) pic of the screwhead?

Often, you might get just one more good crack at it. A pic will help immensely!

Re: Stripped screw preventing tube change.

my stepdad has a bit that burroughs into a stripped screw head and kinda digs a new head and screws it out...

a easier fix than i thought and a middle finger to the original owner who installed a Groove Tubes 12AX7R in V1 and stripped the screw!

I now have 3 gold pin EHX tubes with a proper balanced tube in the PI of V3.

thanks for all your help...you should see the screw now!:rocket:

Re: Stripped screw preventing tube change.

You could drill the head off of it...then the screw will drop out ;& replace w/ a new one.
