Strumming P90s - Les Paul

We all know these are thick sounding pickups, and that's been always hard to me to get a nice tone for strumming (I'd rather go with a strat if I had one).
If feels lacking top and overwhelming mid/bass even when I attempt a soft clean playing.
Any tips?

I can get great chord definition running middle or bridge position. When running middle, I set the bridge vol higher, say bridge at 8 and neck at 3. Tone is adjusted until I get the texture I want to hear.

i like the sound of my dual p90 guitar clean with both pups on, in phase volume up for full treble and strumming lightly. sounds really nice to these abused ears. i usually dont care for out of phase clean tones since they tend to be very narrow

Unless your p90 is super overwound then thick is not how I would describe the typical p90. For the same output, they always seem to be clearer than humbuckers IME.

If you have individual volume and tone controls, change the pot values for the neck pickup. Most p90 guitars I've come across had 300 or 330k pots, if you have those try going to 500k for the neck. You'll still have the bass, but more treble will come through to balance it out.

I was going to suggest a pot change. 500k, or even no-load tone pots would clear that up. If they are still super-thick, then it might be a candidate for a pickup swap.

I have just purchased a les paul 50's tribute with p90's. Is there a way to adust the bridge p/u closer to the strings without shims? Before I get started and screw something up.gblptr5w5ch1-xl-02.jpggblptr5w5ch1-xl-02.jpg

there is usually some foam rubber or something under the pup to push it towards the strings. did the screws come out of the body? if so youll need longer screws
