Studio monitors.

Looking to purchase a pair for my bedroom studio. I've been looking at a set of JBL 305P MkII's and a set of Yamaha HS4's. Is one set more favorable than the other? Appreciate any insight. This will be my first monitor purchase.

I am planning to upgrade my monitors and my research led me to plan to buy a set of Genelec 1029 or 1030. I already have a good subwoofer.

I have the JBL 308P MkII's they sound amazing. I wish I bought the 305s because the 308s are freaking huge. Go to JBL's website to buy direct first they are great at blowing out their gear. Keep in mind there is no rhyme or reason to when or why they put stuff on sale. If they have a new version of a product coming out they radically reduce the old one.

At the 4" - 6" driver size, I'd go JBL, and you might want a subwoofer with that. When you get up to 7" - 8" I'd side with Yamaha for mixing, but you really need the subwoofer with it. 7" - 8" without a subwoofer, I'd go KRK or Mackie, keeping it somewhat affordable.

Yamaha's aren't good full range until the 8". The Yamaha 4" - 6" are missing some mid and bottom to them; uneven sound. JBLs are pretty consistent and honest all through from the low mids to the highs, but at 5" drivers, you'd probably want a subwoofer to get some of the low end to appear.
