Studio monitors

i'm looking for a set of monitors and my budget is around the 300-400$ mark (for a set)... soo, i'm looking for the entryway of studio monitors.

i found some in the local stores and maybe someone here knows anything about em, in terms of sound quality and reliability.
i dont have a huge mixing board with a massive output amp, so i think i should go for a pair of actives.
there is one that caught my eye, which is the Alesis M-1MKII. my other options are Proel, Phonic, Galien Krueger, i think also Hartke/Samson and possibly Laney.
if anybody else has any suggestions as to; which ones from these manufacturers are good (if any) and, if there are any other manufacturers i should be looking at, in that price range.

thanks

Re: Studio monitors

Snag some KRK Rokit 5's, and pick up a sub later on for better bass response.

I've not heard many good things about the Alesis or the Samson ones, and I don't think GK and Laney make actual studio monitors.

Re: Studio monitors

yea.. you're right.. laney only makes monitors for stage use, not actual studio monitors. i've seen GK monitors in the stores here, but didnt inquire if they have any studio ones.

i'll check the german stores for the KRK's

RP5 right?

yea it says rockit5 on the front.. 200 euro a piece...

what about the event TR5? i recall you having the,.. tr8's right?

Re: Studio monitors

Check out some of your local hi-fi audiophile shops & listen to what they have.

Bring the same CD's from store to store as you listen to things so there's some consistency between what you're hearing...I always carry discs filled with reference material to rooms I don't know or when shopping for gear.

Nobody can tell you what's going to be "right" for you. You gotta listen to 'em and decide for yourself.

Generally speaking, I've found KRK's to be harsh & fatiging over long sessions...maybe try & find some Tannoy's?

Or better yet, save more scratch...go passive & get something killer like Dynaudio's or Adam's & a used hi-fi amp.

You'll be WAAAAAY better off going the 'seperates' route then buying cheap-ass junk like Phonic's.

If they make a TR5, I'd go for it - Event's are my favorite monitors short of Genelecs.

The problem with a 5, for me though, is that without a sub, you're missing a hellofalot of low end. I like to be able to hear down to about 35hz.

Re: Studio monitors

well, it's gonna be a while till i start any bigtime mixing, so currently i dont need to go that low ;)

i want to start with some quality speakers though. i think i'll go for the events. 350 euro for a set + shipping doesnt sound that bad at all and if i dont like em, i got a 30 day money back, no questions asked guarantee.

Re: Studio monitors

The Behringer Truth powered monitors are pretty good for the money. They have 8 inch speakers, and are tuneable. They're basically copies of Mackie, but they're really affordable. I've had mine for years, and have never had a problem with them.

Re: Studio monitors

they're about 130euro (about 150$) per set, more than the events.. it'd be nice to have em, since pretty much everybody who knows something about speakers, is recomending them, but since this is just a hobby for the time being, i dont see why i should buy em, when the events get mentioned in the same sentance as genelecs, as being realy good.

soo.. i ordered the TR5's :D
