i've just bought a mackie desk with direct outs and getting a hercules 16in/12out f/w interface, i wanna be able to mic up drums and mix each drum seperatly post recording what sound card would i need for my computer and interface?

Re: studio soundcard problem

If you have a firewire interface you shouldn't need any soundcard. Just install the software, and the A/D conversion should take place with your interface's hardware. What you will need are preamps for each mic that you want to record. I'm not sure what a mackie desk is, but if it has preamps on it, you can probably just hook it up to your interface. A word of warning though, (although it may be a little too late) recording is a large and complicated field with a lot of ways to waste money. Make sure you know what you are buying and how to use it BEFORE you drop your cash . . . it can really help you stop wasting time and money in the long run.

Your Hercules is your sound card, that's all you need
Take the direct outs from your Mackie, connect them to the inputs on your Hercules and assign each track a separate input in your sequencer and you are ready to go...

Re: studio soundcard problem

does the mackie have direct outs for each channel? if so, then all you should have to do is plug those into the inputs on your interface. i'm hoping the interface is equipped with line leven inputs, since the mackie has all your mic pres?

Re: studio soundcard problem

ye the desk has direct outs for each channel. in the past i've just plugged the mics into the desk, sub-mixed the drums pre-recording and then into the computer ready mixed, i've never used any mic pre amps.
this was my original plan... mics into deck, each mic directed out and into each imput on the hercules then mix on the computer would that setup work?

that should be the ticket right there. give that a shot and see how it works out.
