At the end of last year, they were blowing the GC-exclusive opaque black version out for that price too (normally, the black is translucent over a flamed veneer). I wish I had bought one then. I don't really like the flamey cherry sunburst that's on sale now.
Nonetheless, great bang for the buck!

I bought one about a year ago, it was act. the S.D.O.T.D. too & I love mine, I kept it stock because it was perfect on arrival, odd for M.F. I know but they're great guitars all around! I call it my "Tele From Hell", really awesome PAF sound to the puppies!

I have one of these I picked up local. The stock pickups were junk, and the electronics were barely adequate. It hadn't been taken care of either. Dry, fret sprout, dusty, bad/no setup. I got it for nothing, and so I went to work. New electronics, a set of Duncan Phat Cats, fixed the frets, setup, and it is now one of my new favorites! I got the one in transparent black, and it's gorgeous.

I'll see what I think of the stock pickups when it arrives. I'm not going to decide what pickups to put in it unless I know it actually needs something. But that's easy to refine. I'd either stick with chrome covers or go with zebras.

I keep seeing threads everywhere about the SDOTD, where some guy (or guys) score a really nice guitar for not much $. So when I actually remember to go over there and look at the deal, it's always for, like, drum heads or DJ equipment or something. WHich is good, cause I REALLY don't need to be buying any more guitars right now...

The stock pickups are actually "very okay" for playing cleanly and quietly. They fall apart when you start breaking up the amp, though. Unfortunately, the Tribute Series guitars are not what they used to be. They used to come with free gig bags (nice ones too), they all had the same hardware and pickups as U.S.A. G&Ls, and they were made better too. But they're still good, especially for $300 to $400.

I do have a Custom Custom and Alnico II Pro neck laying around if the pickups are "meh" and need to be replaced. If I feel like it though, I'll see it as an excuse to try out pickups I've been meaning to try, like the Pegasus and '59/Custom Hybrid.
