Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

I have a mesa mark II. I love the thing but I wish it had reverb. Would it be stupid to get some really strong velcro and mount this to the inside of the amp? It would be connected to the effects loop obviously. Would it damage the pedal over time with the vibrations?

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Nothing wrong with that idea at all, as long as there's room in there and it's not too close to any heat-generating components (e.g. power tubes).

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Most pedals are relatively shock/vibration proof. If you want to get really fancy you would figure out a way to wire it off of the amps power source so you only had to plug in the amp cable to get it to work.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

IIRC Mesa's Mark II has a DC outlet on the back so Andrew could just keep a power supply attached to the amp at all times.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Lol . . . fire up the duct tape then! You could always extend some wires and drill a hole on the front of the chassis for a pot so you can control the reverb from where the rest of the controls are . . . but that would probably destroy resale value.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

I was just thinking about this yesterday, after noticing how many tiny pedals are coming out this year. Most of them don't really appeal to me, but the tiny reverb units are perfect for FX loops. You'd probably want to position the unit so you'd have easy access to the DC jack.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Yea, better amp makers will add a 9v out from their amps for pedals.

That's not why they did it. I don't remember why, but it can't be for pedals as the practice was common in the 60's, nearly two decades before pedals started using anything but hard wired power cords or batteries. Fender did it for a long time and Mesa as a higher gain brother to Fender (at least the Mark series) used them too. Mesa used them on the Mark III but not after that as far as I know.

If its a 9v neg ground DC tap off the PT, I don't care what it was for. It could have been for running a dentist drill for all I care, but it can also run a pedal, as long as its ma are under the amperage coming out of the tap.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Well in that case, yeah you're right. I've run a small pedalboard (1Spot powered) off of the outlet on the back of my Bassman.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Yeah, I have that on the back of my amp but I wasn't really sure what it was for. Good to know... thanks AG. ;) It will be nice to just have a grab and go setup.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Yeah I bet that would be a killer combo. Personally I'd hate not being able to turn the reverb on or off without reaching into the back of the amp, but that's just me. I think I could live with it for reverb though - any other effect I'd need to be able to turn on/off with my feet.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

I am playing singer/songwriter type stuff now so I can just put a bit of reverb on and control different tones from the guitar. Should be a great combo.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

I'd just velcro it to the top of the amp, myself. It would be kind of a P.I.T.A. to be reaching into the amp to adjust the reverb IMO. Plus if it's on top, you can always reach over and easily click it off and on. I'm not sure if the Mark II has a power outlet on the back, but you could easily add one if not.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

Velcro on the amp frame, glue a piece of old foam to it for fear of vibration. Done. Great idea.

Re: Stupid idea? Mini reverb inside amp.

The one potential problem that springs to mind is the proximity of the pedal and related cables to the amplifier's transformers.

Having said that, I have spent the last five weeks with a BOSS FRV-1 pedal sitting on top of my Blackstar HT-5 with no problems whatsoever.
