Stupid question

I'm about to load a pair of Pearly Gates into a Les Paul. Are there any specific requirements on solder, or will standard Radio Shack pre-fluxed be OK? Anything else I need to watch out for so I don't become a hazard to myself or others?

Re: Stupid question

On no account use budget, acid core solder.

My preference is for 60/40 18swg flux-cored solder. It contains Lead. Work in a well-ventilated place.

Re: Stupid question

A few random tips :

1. Let the iron heat up
2. Have a damp sponge to lightly wipe the tip of the iron beween soldering joins
3. Run a fan so you dont inhale fumes
4. make sure you have good lighting
5. cover your guitar with a protective cloth - solder can spit and damage finish or you
6. wear eye protection - see #5
7. Always strip and tin the wire ends first. Especially if the pickups are used.
8. When removing the existing pickups, leave 10mm of the existing ground/shield wire so you can solder your ground to that instead of trying to solder to the back of the pot. This becomes your ground point. Soldering to the back of a pot is generally the worst thing the first time pickup swapper does.
9. If you have a meter, use it to check what resistance you see at the jack
10. Gently pull every wire you soldered before you put the cover on. If you can pull the join off, its a bad join and will fail.

Re: Stupid question

You shouldn't need a fire extinguisher!
Aloe vera or pawpaw cream is good for healing burns.:14:

Yes, don't forget to take your meds BEFORE you start soldering! :naughty:

Well, if you felt the need to ask... :scratchch
