Stupid wiring question

What happens when you don't solder together the 2 middle wires in a 4 conductor pickup and just tape them off together? Would the pickup sound any different?

Re: Stupid wiring question

If they stay connected, it will work like a humbucker and sound the same. But without being held together in direct contact they way solder will do, they likely will not stay together in transport or just moving around with the guitar in hand - which will give you no sound, which yes is different.

Re: Stupid wiring question

That might not be the answer to my problem then. I've been wrestling with this one for a couple of weeks:

I've just put in a new set of pickups into my old-ish Kramer. The bridge pickup(old 2-conductor dimarzio/hamer humbucker) is sounding fine but the neck unit(Chopper) is sounding super thin and nasal From what I could tell its as if it were permanently split or in parallel.

Here's the wiring diagram for the way that the guitar is right now:

Diagram looks fine, if the actual wiring matches, not sure what's wrong, unless the pickup itself had a coil disconnected.

Re: Stupid wiring question

Check the grounding path for the Chopper pickup. You may have a dry/cold solder joint somewhere. This would make the pickup sound weak.

Another possibility is that, when you stripped the outer insulation from the 4-con + shield output cable, you severed the colour-coded insulation more than one of the individual conductors. This might create a short and, again, cause the pickup to sound weak.
