Stuuuupid question time...can this be overlaid on an Epi headstock?

Re: Stuuuupid question time...can this be overlaid on an Epi headstock?

After he stated clear as day that his intention was not to disguise his shame, but to change the shape of a headstock that he thought was ugly. He also made very clear that he doesn't care what the headstock says. Why is everybody rushing to judgment over a guitars cosmetics. It'll still play like an epiphone.

I'm not thinking about the OP so much as I am about others out there who, no doubt, want to pretend their Epiphone is a Gibson, either on stage or for an eBay sale.

As far as the OP goes, I've never understood disliking the headstock shape of a guitar that I bought, so much that I felt the need to change it. It's like digging a splinter out with a band saw -- splinter's gone, but…

Exactly how does modifying a piece of your guitar make you a poser? We change pots, pickups, caps, strings, tuning pegs, all sorts of ****, but we draw the line with the shape of the wood? That seems pretty snobby to me.

Not at all. Changing a pot of pickup on an epi or whatever else doesnt make the guitar look like another, higher end, brand. Taking a more affordable guitar and making it look like a high end one can only be done for appearance sake...so you can look like you own something you dont. That is posing.

I use a Squier tele all the time, it says Squier on the head and I think it cool. No snobbery at all.

Re: Stuuuupid question time...can this be overlaid on an Epi headstock?

See, I don't know why anyone would see anything wrong with that...UNLESS the owner was trying to pass it off as a real Gibson or worse yet, try to sell it as a real Gibson. Please understand that it isn't the name Epiphone on the headstock that bothers me. It is the shape of the headstock. I love the headstock on my 1968 Epiphone Casino, which is a lot different from these new ones, and the new Epi headstocks don't bother me on the hollow bodies, just the SGs and Les Pauls.

It's like having a girl with a gorgeous body, but a face you can't look at, lol. I don't know why I hate the shape of the headstocks so much, I just do. When I'm playing the guitar, and it sounds so good, and feels so good, when and I'm rockin' it, the headstock is the furthest thing from my mind. But when I'm looking at it in the case or in photos....eeew.

Your right to do this mod and my right to be annoyed by it are both sacred. Play it in good health.

Well you missed the point entirely. Fender and Squier have similar headstocks. Gibson and Epiphone do not. 75lespaul said he just didn't like the shape of his epi headstock, and wanted to change it, he never said he wanted to make it appear as though he owned a higher quality item.

Yeah, but the SHAPE of the Squier headstock is the same as a Fender headstock. Just to remind you of the spirit of my original post--and I'm not being condescending or nasty here--I am not trying to change the name on the headstock. If I could keep the Epiphone name, but change the shape of the headstock, that is what I would go for. I HATE THE SHAPE OF THE HEADSTOCK IS ALL. If the only way to change it to something that I liked was to put that Gibson plate on it, then I would do it. Actually, I don't even like the "custom" diamond in the middle of it, so I wouldn't even use that one. I would never try to pass it off as a Gibson, ever. As many people who know me on this forum are aware of, I've been the owner of a Chinese Gibson fake for many, many years. I've never once tried to tell anyone that it is real, and I go out of my way to point out that it's not if asked. I love the guitar, and it is one of my best sounding and playing guitars as well.

This thread has gone very far out of where it should have, and I was just asking the simple question of "is there a way to change the shape of the headstock", not "can I make my Epiphone into a Fake Gibson.?" If I wanted a fake Gibson, I would have bought one.

Re: Stuuuupid question time...can this be overlaid on an Epi headstock?

I think the big disconnect, for me, is that I don't have experience with the older Epiphones and what those headstocks were like. For me, Epi headstocks have always been the way they are now; they seem normal to me.

I'd probably be bothered more by the name on the headstock not matching what my guitar really is. I wouldn't want my Gibson to say Heritage on it; I wouldn't want my Jackson to have an ESP or BC Rich headstock.

We all have our little quirks and hangups, is all.

Now THAT is what I'm talkin' 'bout, lol. No problem with not seeing eye to eye.

It's really strange how you posted that pic, because I just found the thread where it came from. The guy cut off the sides of the headstock and added wings! Check for posts from "Vinz". I believe he starts describing what he's doing on page one, and pics start on page four.

And yes, the headstock is better and the name is still intact. No posing, lol.

Re: Stuuuupid question time...can this be overlaid on an Epi headstock?

I saw a thread years ago about an epi dot that was converted into a gibson with a canadian flag paint job. I cannot find it anywhere. It was very well done.

Look, an Epiphone head is just a Gibson one with the corners chopped off. So, if you hate it that much, remove the Epiphone head veneer, take out the inlay, strip the head, glue some oversized corner wings on, install the old inlay onto a new head veneer, attach that veneer, shape the new corners, and then refinish, matching the color perfectly and blending the new finish with the original poly. Easy! And well worth it to get rid of those two ugly scallops on the Epi head. :beerchug:

Seriously, man. Just save that trouble and expense and get a recent Japanese Epi, which are the same as Orvilles and Elitists, but with a Gibson head. They are also at least 3x the guitar that a Chinese-made Epi is. Basically a Gibson with a poly finish. Check out this sweetie for an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/06-Epiphone...d-/150662049936?pt=Guitar&hash=item2314287090.
