Success in Nashville!!!!!

Well I checked one of the bucket list boxes in Nashville. I finally got to play an original Les Paul Burst.

It was pretty eff'n awesome too. The hype is not overrated, ridiculous awesome, way better than I was ready for and I was expecting a lot. 1960 cherry burst standard and the original PAF'S did not disappoint. Through a vintage Marshall Plexi. This was at Rumble Seat. Killer vintage guitar and amp shop, friendly staff and it was set up where it felt homey. Tons of killer vintage stuff. Most of it out of my league but I did score a MXR Phase 90 for my bag of White Zombie tone tricks.

I was after pickups too so the guys said go down to Carter Vintage Guitars.

This place was guitar heaven. Three or four hundred electrics, several tryout rooms each loaded with about a dozen vintage amps to test on. No joking they had more than likely 500 different guitar pedals. Stacks of hard to find pickups too. They had dozens of sets of Lollar, Bare knuckles, OX4, Seymour Duncan, Lace etc.... I ended up buying a set of BKP Riff Raffs after my '60 burst encounter a half hour earlier. This is THE best electric guitar store ever!

I was also after fuzz pedals. They had all five of my try list and set me up with a vintage Fender deluxe reverb to try them on. After a few minutes the guy brought me 8 more to try out from talking about what I wanted earlier. None of my trys made it but one of his did, with a VERY honorable mention to another. I got a EarthQuaker Spires Fuzz and almost a Matthew's Effects, The Whaler Fuzz. I also got a Caitlinbread Sabbra Cadabra for some Iommi fun.

After that I went to Gruhn. I'm not going to badmouth them, but don't have a lot of good to say about this place.

Next I hit Broadway and started asking the players where to go. They all said Eastside Music Supply. This was a players store! Smaller but a great selection of quality guitars and amps for serious players who know what's good and they had even rarer pedals than Carter's. They probably had 200 pedals and I ended up buying an Old Blood, Haunt Fuzz, a killer non-traditional fuzz.

The two that I ran out of money to go to that all the local boys also said to visit was, Corner Music & Fanny's Music. Next time for sure.

Nashville was a REALLY AWESOME guitar safari town!

Those kind of stores make me wish I were a millionaire. Fun, yet kinda depressing at the same time.

It's sorta like going to a major auto show. Your wallet feels like rice paper the minute you walk through the front door.

At least you walked away with some fun new toys. Let us know about the BKP Riff Raffs once you install them.

Re: Success in Nashville!!!!!

I couldn't help but think of all the songs and gigs all that gear had been part of over the years, the ups and downs of the lives of the past owners. Shaping the musical landscape in multiple ways as they went along.

For the most part I'm super happy with my modest gear collection. Even if I'll never be in a position to own a real PAF equipped classic at least I was able to experience the tone and feel once. A lot of my favorite artists rocked them and that tone was so cool to hear with my own hands making it. Knowing that they really shouldn't be played in the fashion that I play took a whole lot of sting out of not being able to afford something like that.

Will do on the Riff Raffs, I'll swap to bridge out soon, I'm really hesitant to swap out my PGn. I love it and have history with it but it's a little further from real PAF tone than I thought it would be. However the un-potted Seth's I have played are pretty damn close. I'll see and if it doesn't work out I can always go back.

Re: Success in Nashville!!!!!

Sounds like a really fun day! I'm simultaneously sad that we don't have great music stores like that where I live, and kind of happy since I couldn't afford anything there anyway...
And the "you wish" case, represents more $ than my, and my parents houses put together!

Re: Success in Nashville!!!!!

Ok, the burst was a neck repair, a BIG detractor in the value. That being said you can find that exact burst on Reverb right now for a measly $135k. Lol, still out of my price range.

I suspected it had been re-necked a few minutes after they handed it to me b/c the binding was still perfect in the spots where it jumped a fretwire. My '01 Classic already has minute cracks in the binding there, showing up only 15 years after I bought it. They did tell me once I was playing it, but waited to see the grin on my face from even holding it. Still a effn amazing guitar, the Brazilian board was probably a @#$%#$%^ to find for it. Cool guys there at Rumble Seat for sure.

If you have a regional airport close to home it is worth a trip with some tax return money. I'm not exaggerating a single detail of how good this town was for guitar nerds. Plus they had dozens of live bands every night on Broadway. Flights into Nashville are pretty cheap and it's a $10 Uber ride to most of the guitar shops, with a bunch of them being walking distance from each other. Oh, and go eat @ Hattie B's Hot Chicken, they made Popeye's taste like ALPO.

First, thanks for the great report. Nashville itself is on my bucket list, and your report just made the city look even sweeter.

Second, isn't the PGn a PAF, specifically a reproduction of the one in the original Pearly Gates guitar? As we know, "PAF" isn't one thing, since there was so much variance in production back in the day. I can get that the PGn isn't super low output and crystal clear, but to my mind, PAF is more of a class of pickups than a single target to be hit or missed.

Re: Success in Nashville!!!!!

Most of the Duncan offering go away from the pure PAF formula as many would find the actual PAF a bit bright. The pickups are generally targeted to be a bit less vintage and a bit more rock - lower treble, more grunt. Its so they appeal to the masses more, which is a great thing for most players. Some of the originals can be quite 'present'.

Did you eat any hot chicken here? For a while, I was going to Hattie B's once a week.

True, I was basing it off only this particular PAF set. You're describing the difference in the tones perfectly.

Bingo!

A super short video, everyone I went with was oblivious to what was happening and what I was playing so they only caught the extreme tail end.

Hattie B's FTW!

Re: Success in Nashville!!!!!

Hells yeah, check post #8.
If you go to the Hattie B's on Charlotte pike, you can follow it up with a milkshake from another Nashville staple, Bobbie's dairy dip. They are right next to each other.
