Suddenly this pedal does not exist: Overdrive

Sure. I quad tracked guitars for the heavy part in the song at around 16 minute mark. For tracks 3 and 4 I only used a comp pedal into the amp. Rick Beato did an interesting video where he says Dave Friedman told him that an alternative to using a tube screamer in front of a distorted amp to tighten the low end is to use lighter strings. 'Tis true: I tracked guitars 3 and 4 with 8s. (I'm back to 10s and 11s though for other reasons. lol)

It depends on what type of tone you’re after. I have a Splawn Quickrod and although it is capable of a ton of gain, I prefer it’s tone when I boost it. It allows me to lower the gain from the amp and get a more harmonically rich tone than I can get from the amp alone.
It’s how the tone of the 80’s was made.

If you’re after a classic rock, blues, jazz etc type tone, then sure….no boost necessary.

Agreed. Either way, no OD or distortion pedals necessary. With the right amp, of course.

My ADA MP-1 and Satch JVM do not need any overdrives, and neither do the two amps I hope to acquire still (Rockman and JVM). Only the SC20 needs to be boosted, and I could probably do without it, since it mostly an "at home" amp.

the sc20 would have enough gain on its own for me but i know plenty of players would want more

I like having an SD-1 to go with it. It isn't a huge increase in gain, but it is enough to take me from crunchy new wave to classic heavy metal. If I were to use really high-output pickups I might be able to get around it.

I had not considered the impact on our lower voiced brethren. I like clean bass, so I'm OK there.

I don’t but I’ve played with OD for so long I don’t have a very consistent touch. It’s been my mix filler/compressor for so long it feels weird without it.

I actually really like the OD built into my HArtke TX300. The Scrambler on my Ampeg SCR is a different beast. By my own rules - those would both stop working.

i totally understand that. i used to have a few jcm800s and always used a sd1 to push em. these days i use less gain than i did back then so could get away without the boost

Since my gig is a Country band, it's not an issue. For this band, I go as clean as I can; but, if someone removed my Route 66, I'd have a problem because my compressor is part of it.

I'm seeing an interesting thing here, that between our SDUG focus on TuH Br00-ullZ and clean playing...we are not huge OD users, perhaps...

I am. But I can get the tone I want without one if necessary. With my amp dialed up dirty enough, a compressor can be used to get a cleaner tone, or roll back the guitar volume. Medium drive can be accomplished by rolling back the guitar volume. Simply a matter of going old school again. There are many ways to accomplish it but I do like using an OD pedal out front.

i think its more that there are ways to get around using an od pedal, maybe not optimal but functional

Well, I wouldn't use my 805 because it doesn't exist, but given the choice, I would absolutely use it.
