Suddenly this pedal does not exist: Overdrive

Well, you survived the disappearance of Chorus pretty easily. Let's give you a hard one this time. You wake one morning to find the Overdrives are all gone. Not gonna be so easy this time. TS9's, 808's, SD-1, Blues Drivers, and every other non "Distortion" box just doesn't exist and all the knowledge of humanity can't bring them back.

* Natural amp OD is fine. If your amp does that....well enough. For you.
** Straight up booster like MXR Micro Amp, Keeley Katana, etc is OK. Klon, RC Boosts, anything that adds grit itself is not.

How does this effect you?
Can you survive?
How do you get by?
Will you quit playing?
Can you go on?
What about that Fender amp???

Go!

You should do another thread called "Suddenly tubes do not exist", I am pretty sure that will be intense.

I use an AMT SS-20, it is a preamp with a real 12AX7 in it, I can do any sound I want from it, purist may hate it but it is good enough for me. Using my Strat with SSS can do blues, RHCP, The Police, etc. The Charvel with JB/Jazz can do 70s/80s hard rock and metal into the crunch channel. The lead channel is just too much for me.

I'm wondering which of my distortion and fuzz pedals I could dial down to overdrive like sound. Maybe the Flatiron fuzz could do that since it is based on the Rat. I'm sure some of my other pedals could do that also.

Thing about an overdrive pedal is that it generally adds mids, and gets rid of bass. A fuzz doesn't do that on the lowest settings...it just sounds like a dying battery.

I love the Plexi tone but like you, l need it boosted. The amp alone just doesn’t have “enough”…

Same. So use a clean boost or an EQ pedal to get it over the top. Or even a mild distortion. The DS-1 is actually really good at slamming the front end of a Plexi style amp.

People like to use higher efficiency speakers for greater clarity but that efficiency and clarity can lead to excessive volume. So people try to compensate by using attenuators, and OD pedals to thicken their sound when they would probably be better served by using lower wattage and lower efficiency speakers.

Or just use a louder amp....just sayin'

A 900 while not a Plexi, can do Plexi. But a Plexi can't do 900 without serious help.

(I know - not the same thing - but you get the point)

Yes, I do.

If you want more drive, a louder amp isn’t the way to go without blowing everyone away. Go with a lower wattage amp and crank it up. Won’t be as loud and still give up the goods.

Sorry - din't mean volume louder - meant gainier.

I'm seeing an interesting thing here, that between our SDUG focus on TuH Br00-ullZ and clean playing...we are not huge OD users, perhaps...

I think that is an artifact of OD being best for NMV high-wattage Marshall types, which few are using these days because they aren't practical. There's such a range of gain and channels available on current lower power amps these days that old pedal strategies like OD >> 100watt aren't necessary, even if they would 'sound' better. It's not practical to put a Super Lead 100 in the club bathroom with an OD out front just to sound 5% more authentic than your Mesa or my SL-X can do by itself, just for the living-for-Friday-night crowd, know what I mean?

Maybe OD is also practical for pushing tweed Fenders. But recent tweed Fenders can get there without an OD to push them. Maybe not enough country and blues players on the forum?

An OD pedal into a clean Fender is generally 'my sound', but I don't suspect most people here do that sort of thing.
