I am looking for a tube amp which can handle jazz-rock I want to be able to crank the volume to get good power amp distortion. Also good with both clean and overdrive settings. It shud sound good miked.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

of those i picked a blues jr, i think it has the most potential. when i think tube amp, i think tube pre and power, so the avt type hybrid isnt a tube amp. in the case of the avt20 not a bad amp but not a tube amp.

i have a blues jr that is a tone machine. good tubes and a good speaker make a big difference. the speaker i feel is the weakest part, that fender thing is the same that they use in the hot rod deluxe. i use a g12m and it really improved the tone

I can only vote what I know ... I got the B Jr because of word of mouth.

my site is full of B Jr clips.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

I recommend having a listen to some of Curly's clips. They sound really nice, and I think you'll be a little way closer to buying a B jr after you listen.

ooh, thanks, Jonny

I originally got the Blues Junior to replace a Champ II and a blackfaced Princeton Reverb that I sold :( - both great little tube amps, and there's nothing better than a little tube amp for playing at home.

like jeremy and others, I've replaced the speaker and tubes, and mine cranks out some great tones, and even gets loud enough to pester the neighbors :)

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

I have a 65 Twin RI and I have to admit I've been quite tempted a couple of times to get a Blues jr for home use too. I think I underappreciated the value of a small tube amp before I joined this forum.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

for the record, I've heard the Princeton Reverb referred to as "the most recorded amp ever"

amps in the 15 watt range just seem very well suited for home and studio ..
crank a little amp in the studio, and it can sound HUGE ;)

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

Laney LC15 vote here. A 100% Birtish character (think of Vox vs Marshall in-a-box) and it is pretty badass for such a little amp. It comes with a nice price, too.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

I'm just waiting for a LC15R to turn up, when it's here I'll let you know what I think of it.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

The Bogner's are excellent. If you can find one, the recently discontinued Orange AD1512 is excellent, too, for considerably less cash. Both are much nicer than the Pro or Blues Juniors, but of course cost several times the $$$. The Traynor YCV20 would be a better bet overall than the Fender Jrs for not much more dough. And it's tough to beat a silverface or blackface Princeton reverb or nonreverb model, although they don't seem quite as loud as the Bogner or Orange models.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

The Univalve is OK. However, it doesn't have reverb and can be a very unforgiving amp. Good if your looking to improve your technique. But you have to be on every time you play this amp. If you have an off night it will really show. Maybe that's why a lot of people use it as studio amp. It has taken me months to get used to this amp. Also, it's only as versatile as your pockets are deep. Get ready to spend more money for tube swapping.

The Blues Junior or the Peavey Classic 30 are plug'n play amps and you can upgrade them. What's cool about an amp like this is whatever is in there is easy to get at.

With the Univalve I go through a lot of wondering if I should be swapping tubes to get a better sound and playing with the dials trying to understand how they interact. Messing with the built in hot-plate or turning off the built in noise reduction. Messing with my volume & tone nobs on my guitar. On average I spend the first 30 minutes of each session getting the sound right.

I'm not an expert on amp setting and it may be easier for other Univalve users, but IMO this amp is for people who like to tweak & tweak & tweak their amps. I getting to like this amp, but it's been a journey.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

I use 2 Blues Juniors for sessions, some gigs and also at home (although I do have other tube amps as well). These have been replaced with Jensen speakers and JJ tubes (although the Groove tubes that they came with are fine I needed something else).

You will find that these are great amps and will give you some very nice clean tones and of course being a 15W it is easy to drive and get the creamy distortion that the power valves put out. Unless you are doing some really big gigs - Blues Juniors will handle most places/gigs and are very easily transportable. Make sure that you place them on stands or just get them of the floor. You will not lose out too much financially, as these amps are always sought after and it is likely that you will recoup at least 70-85% of your money back.

Re: Suggest a great 15w tube amp

I play through two late 50's Fender tweed Deluxes with Celestion Alnico G12 speakers. Amps under 20 watts get great overdriven tones but do not do clean well. That's why I play through two and why Fender invented bigger amps like the Twin: better clean tone.

I'd build one or two 5E3 tweed Deluxe type amps: http://www.missionamps.com
