Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

Hey folks, I have been rocking 10-46 daddarios on my 25.5 scale guitars for a while and am looking at going higher in gauge. What would you suggest????

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

I just put ClearTone Drop D's on every guitar i own. .011-.058 i think?

I like them cuz they're fat enough that i can tune to C standard and they'll be just barely too slinky, but i can tune to E standard and they'll be just barely too tight. I still have multiple guitars for multiple tunings (and their truss rods adjusted for such) but it's cool to know that if i'm in a pinch i can use any of my guitars as a spare for any of the other ones.

I like the D'Addario 11-52 (or DR 11-50) down to D standard, 11-56 for drop C or anything lower. It's a great balance between flexibility and playability.

I like to put Ernie Ball Power Slinky strings on my guitars. I used to use the skinny top heavy bottom set, which is 10-52, but now the power set is 11-48. ive been using that. its kinda tight but the tone is monstrous.

You can use D'addarios by default.

I prefer 11-52 myself. Blue Steels sound really good with my tele. I also like GHS 11s.

DR Titefits for humbuckers, Pure Blues for singles and P-90's.

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

I would suggest going with the same brand as you are using when you switch size, because all of them feel a bit different.. so you may string on with Ernie Ball or DR 11's and hate it and never test 11's again because of it, so you may as well go the safe route and take a string that your fingers and ears are used to and just get the bigger size.

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

I use Power Slinky's too. But recently I got some sets of Dean Markley 1975's, because I like the heavier low strings. The E is .052, instead of the Power Slinkys' .048.
I got a couple of sets of Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky's to put on one guitar. I haven't put them on yet. I may find I need the nut slots filed wider before I can get them on.

I use D'Adarrio Xl115's on all my electrics regardless of scale. They are 11 thru 48 or 49. I was using 10's also and had no real issue upgrading to a heavier string. I also tune most everything to pitch(A440) except my slide guitars. One is tuned to open A (sometimes I bring it down to G) & the other is tuned to D or E. I have never had any complaints with the D'Adarrio's I get really good life & they sound fine!:headbang:

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

Daddario 11-54 XLs
Ernie Ball 11-56 slinkies
DR DDT 11-56

used all, love all. found that i needed/wanted a heavier bottom end though, because the 54 from the daddario set was ratting a bit much.

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

I've been using Ernie Ball Power Slinky's for about ten years now.

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

if you buy the Dean Markley sets you get both a wound and an unwound G string.

Plus the DM Nickelsteel sound great IMHO.

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

i will be keeping this guitar in standard tuning and prefer also being able to bend, I think I will try out the 11-49s!

Re: Suggest an 11 gauge set of strings!

I have been using Snake Oil strings for several years now, and have found them to be of excellent quality. The guy that makes/sells them will put together ANY combination you want.

I still keep some Hybrid Slinky's around, but Snake Oil's are the bomb.

Take the time to read some of his articles on strings and material theory. His original set is all nickle, while a lot of strings today I believe are steel or other alloy's. You can tell a big difference, IMO, in the tone of the all nickles. I also have a couple sets of his Rock Strings, and they are great too. Prices are not enough more to stop me from buying them.

Check em out. http://www.snakeoilstrings.com/

Oh, and they last at least 3 x's as long as any other string I've used. My strat was literally in storage for 3 years and I pulled it out of the case and the strings stil feel brand new. Smooth and silky, not a bit of roughness. I had a set on my Les Paul and Dean Hardtail for well over a year with no loss in tone or playability. Some people who have found that their sweat ruins guitar strings have solved their problem with these strings. They really are very good.

like some mentioned the ernie ball sets. i used to have 12-56 and now the 10-52, they're both good, bright and huge sounding (except for the G string. there's always something wrong with it and i can't figure out what) so i guess the set you're looking for (11-54) should be good for you. as long as you want bright and big sounding.
