Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

I'd make a suggestion if I could, but I'll need a little more infomation about what your attempting to do.

the normal Strat neck attachment method is four #8 X 1.750 long oval headed tapping screws and a neck plate.

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

I have a vague memory of the late Terry Kath (of Chicago) saying in a 1970s interview that he had a Strat that had it's neck held on by a radiator clamp.

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

Yeah...right. A clamp will sorta interfere with the strings a bit. Will make for some interesting playing I would say.

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

Clamp? Too bulky and clumsy. I prefer to dunk the neck in Elmers glue, cram it into the neck pocket, then use a nice sledge hammer on the headstock until i've driven the neck a good half inch into the neck pickup cavity. Then i cover it with lighter fluid, toss a lit match on it, and leave it on my amp to dry, hopefully never playing guitar again in my life.

Is this that sarcasm thing I've been hearing about?

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

Does anyone seriously think he's using the clamps for any reason other than temprrarily clamping the neck to the body before alighning the neck and strings before drilling the holes to screw bolt the neck to the body?

Given the lack of information provided, who knows. The subject just says "clamps for attaching strat neck". He might be gluing the neck into the pocket, and wants clamps to hold it while it dries. I hope not, but that's another possibility.

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

If it's for neck placement, I recommend Bessey clamps, but have done just fine with Irwin Quick Grips. Those Irwin Quick Grips are a thing of beauty.

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

Home Depot has a great selection of C clamps.

thanks. just a regular old C clamp, eh ? is there any particular width that the surface plates that would touch back of the neck pocket and top of the fretboard should be ?

and any thoughts on what type of padding i should use to protect the neck and frets ? it seems that sufficient pressure to hold the neck tight enough would bend the frets and/or crunch the fretboard. seems like a very dangerous endeavor to undertake.

thanks so much. i'm looking into them now. the Bessey's seem pretty expensive. the Irwin's price is better. is there a particular model of each that you prefer ?

Re: Suggest Clamps For Attaching Strat Neck

I doubt you'll need to tighten the clamps enough to actually do any damage. Also, I've had strats with neck pockets tight enough that I could pick the body up and have the neck stay in place with no screws/clamps, so you mostly need the clamps to make sure nothing moves while you make your marks.
