http://cdo.seymourduncan.com/forum/images/smilies/1zhelp.gifhi, i need help!. I cant decide which pickup to choose for a chambered body (maple cap, purpleheart center with maple wings). This guitar have a good sustain and a very good acoustic sound. Now the pickup aboard are a no name humbucker bridge (from a old kramer stryker) and gfs hot rail in neck. i realy need sugestion but i have read a lot on the forum and (for the bridge) i concluded:
Sh-5-Custom, sh-14-custom5 or sh-15-alt8.maybe sh-14 with A8 magnet. My first idea was the JB but i fear it will too harsh (i have listen all i can on youtube for comparaison). But i like the harmonic from the JB.
And for the neck : one of the lil' serie (jb jr, 59, screaming demon?) But i'm open to widen the slot to put a h'bucker in the neck too.For each pickup, i split the coil.Right now , my neck pickup is serie/coil tap/parrall. If you have some good idea, it will be real appreciated.

I forgot to tell: i'm more in classic rock/ blues.I like zztop crunch, angus tone, EVH.

p.s: I'm a french native , so i'm sorry if i write weird phrase.http://cdo.seymourduncan.com/forum/images/smilies/doh.gif

Re: Suggestion for custom homemade guitar

The players you mention all use much lower output pickups than your mentioned examples. I'd go for a hot PAF, like the WHL or the '78. The C/59 might also be on the radar for slightly more crunch. The hotter pickups tend to squash the dynamics of playing a bit IMO.

Bienvenu.

Take DC resistance meter readings on those ex-Kramer pickups. They could be Schaller. By the same token, they could be dogbreath Korean rubbish.

The other question that needs asking is, what amplification and/or pedals do you use?

Re: Suggestion for custom homemade guitar

thank for the answer! The pickup is a old Sonics Turbo (made by Seymour Duncan). My main amp is a yamaha DG-80 ( i love this amp, i even have the dg-stomp to record on pc). I have make more search of clip sound and for now, the next possible setup will be : sd 78 in bridge and Alnico II Pro in neck. I see some clone from different maker too (sd 78 = GFS veh and TONERIDER rocksong and Alnnico II Pro= GFS classic II). i do you think about those possible clone. I'm know its not the real deal but those price are real attractive.

Re: Suggestion for custom homemade guitar

I have tried - and still use - the Tonerider Rocksong B and SD Alnico II Pro pickups but not in the same guitar.

I claim no knowledge or experience of the GFS items.

For the neck position, string-to-polepiece alignment could be an issue. Therefore, blade or rail type pickups might be the wisest choice.

Re: Suggestion for custom homemade guitar

nut i dont have find i good alnico 2 rail. Now i have a single coil rail but i want to rout for hbucker on the neck. Why do you think polepiece alignment be a problem if a take neck pu that i put in the neck slot. For your Tonerider Rocksong, to which sd pu do you compare it?

For your Tonerider Rocksong, to which sd pu do you compare it?

I wouldn't liken the TR Rocksong directly to any SD model.

I was aiming for something along the lines of the SD Custom Shop Brobucker. "More" than a PAF but not too much more. I have this pickup in a mostly maple, semi-hollow guitar. The extra midrange push of the pickup compensates to some extent for the lack of solidity.

Re: Suggestion for custom homemade guitar

i didnt know this pickup but this is the kind of sound i like ( from what i have read and hear on youtube). So i have check in the forum and so people compare the 78' with Brobucker (78 a little more agressive/brighter). I see the im1 too but all these pickup are over 150$ range. I search a little bit about the GFS veh (found a couple of audio clip too) and i think i 'm gonna try one for bridge. Its only 35$ . Its a A5 magnet but maybe try it with a A2 because i read all the 78', im1 and Brobucker are A2. I see some retrotron (london and nashville)gretsh version PU on theyr site maybe try for a malcom young/tom petty guitar.
