Suggestion for Jackson RR

Hi guys,

I've been drooling about these new Jackson Pro Series RR24, in natural finish, since pointy guitars and wood grain are two of my guilty pleasures.

They have a mahogany body, one-piece through-body maple neck with hand-rubbed oil back finish, graphite reinforcement and wrap-around comfort heel, and a 12”-16” compound radius ebony fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets, and a reverse headstock. Briidge is an OFR.

They come with a Distortion set. I already have a bridge Distortion on a Dean V, so I'm looking for something different.

I' m considering the following:

-Full Shred set;
-'59/Custom bridge/ '59 neck;
-Custom 5 / Full Shred;

Both will be wired for series/parallel mode.

I play rock/ classic rock/ melodic metal through a Hughes&Kettner Grandmeister 40 Deluxe. Will be using clean and distortion.

What are your suggestions?

Stay away from the Full Shred set unless you're a very precise player, they're not very forgiving.
I have an RR24XT with Bill Lawrence USA 500XL in the bridge and it kicks ass.

I would disagree with you there. 24 fret guitars don't work so well with the usual neck pickups. My favourite neck pups are the 59 or Dimarzio PAF but in 24 fret guitars they are wasted. To be honest, I find any old cheapo Ibanez INF pickup works better than anything else in the neck of a 24 fret guitar.

I'd try this on that guitar. I heard RR used JBs too.

I already have a JB in an alder Dinky, and rules. But since all my other 10 guitars have different Duncans, I'm going for those I don't yet own.

And I'm staying with Duncans, tried other brands and they don't do it for me.

I'd try this on that guitar. I heard RR used JBs too.

Randy also used Dimarzio Super Distortion.

Wolfshead I have a 59 in my SLS3 (24 fretter) and a 'lil 59 in my Forest GT (24 fretter) and I think they sound pretty damn good! Now I haven't tried 59 in a 22 fretter but I hear some people complain about it being woofy or too bassy? I don't really have that problem with mine and I suspect maybe it's the fact that the 24 fret positioning of the neck pickup moves the pickup just far enough down to pickup less of the bass. Just a guess though, not sure if that's true or not. I've also played several DK2Ms and they had the Jazz Model and that sounds quite nice in the neck too. We probably run really different amp settings though, lol

OP if you want to try something different then maybe you should go with a Custom! That thing is amazing

As a long time Jackson Rhoads guy, I'm going to suggest you try the stock pickups and see where you want to go from there. If you have a baseline that many of us are familiar with and know what you want to change about it, we can offer better suggestions. Generally, I don't find pickups like the Custom 5 and the '59 work all that well in these guitars and I've owned both RR24s and regular RR models.
