Suggestions for Blues/Rock Pickup Combo

Re: Suggestions for Blues/Rock Pickup Combo

suffein, check ebay & be patient, I seeblack & whites up there about every week. I second gripeweed's suggestion of 59b & jazz neck..the 50 bridge has pleanty of glass and a nice clean tone - enough character to be sweet, with some soul. Rocks out with some overdrive. The 59N is a bit darker, while the Jazz neck is cleaner, hence the combination 59b JazzN. Someone said JB bridge - not a bad pickup split - very good clean that way...the JB unsplit though is a bit hard with that mid spike. However it rocks a lot harder than a 59bridge.

In dimarzioland a Paf pro bridge & PAF classic neck and you're there (cheaper too).

If you want to play Pink Floyd and Gin Blossoms you definately need to be able to split the coils if you go Humbucker route. I personally think that a Strat would serve you best, but if you are set on humbuckers then the JB and Jazz combo will probably be your best bet as both can be split and sound good doing it.

Several have mentioned the JB and I don't get it. The JB is a high output pickup and he wants low output.

Re: Suggestions for Blues/Rock Pickup Combo

Do you think I should just go with a strat?

I know David Gilmour uses EMG-SA pups. I don't know what Gin Blossoms uses.

The sound that I'm going for most is something like Better Than Ezra (mostly the sounds on their "Deluxe" and "Friction, Baby" albums) and something like old Silverchair, especially in their song "Shade". I really didn't want to go strat because it could be a little expensive, but I will if it means that I'll get my tone. I do want hum-free pickups, though. I'm going for blues/rock/pop style, basically.

Hope that helps clear up anything that might've been confusing.

Well, strat & tele are very different...for one thing most strats have a trem, which changes the tone...yes you can snug it down & block it but still, it's a different sound than a fixed-bridge, through-body strung guitar (tele).

Also the strat has contours, which affects the angle of the fretboard, and helps the ergonomics of the forearm.

Some folks (myself, old RSI suffer, included) like a flat-backed body. Helps the wrist (strats turn up at you a bit).

ALso the controls are a lot different...I cannot stand where the vol crtl is with the strat some love it there....

So, you're saying a Tele would be better for the sound I'm going for?

What about a string through Tele with a TOM bridge? How much of a differece would that make as far as the tone of the instrument is concerned?
