Hey Guys, first time poster.
I’m going to save you guys an intro and get down to business, I have what I believe to be a fairly unique situation. I have a 2016 Gibson SG Standard, Mahogany body that came stock with P90 pickups.
I’m primarily a metal player, so I removed the P90’s and ordered a set of EMG P81 (bridge) and P60(Neck). They are just humbuckers in P90 casing and sound identical to the real thing.
But this is my second guitar with an 81 bridge pickup and frankly I’m a bit bored of the tonality.
I’m running through a MXR Clean boost, to an ISP decimator, to a 6505+ with a 4x12 custom avatar cab.
So… I’ve been researching the SD pickup line, and plan on having a custom P90 pickup ordered from the custom shop (already communicated with them) the thing I’m not sure about is which tonality to have it modelled after.
Essentially, I want crushing, tight lows, but less brittle/generic sounding then the 81s. My personal favorite guitar tone would be Alexi laiho in the hatebreeder album,(see black widow). But would prefer a bit more low end. I also love gary holts tone from Tempo of the Damned, and the guitar tone from the “Intervals” album “The sound of colour” (see “Sure Shot”)
So, Recap
Mahogany Gibson SG Standard
6505+ with CLEAN boost, I know this is useless info without hearing the amp in its environment but my settings are Pres: 6 Res:7. Treb:6 Mid: 5.5 Low: 8.5, Gain on 6.5 with boost, when I gig I modify on the spot to replicate this sound depending on the acoustics.
Want an intricate tone, but lots of low end still… Something that can do Euro, and thrash.
I’ve narrowed it down to either the Nazgul or Pegasus, but am open to other suggestions/opinions. I’ve heard of Nazguls being overwhelming, but I’m used to containing lots of gain and I’ve heard a lot of people mismatch them with Basswood when they are really meant for mahogany… Seeing as I have a full mahogany guitar, I’m curious if this would be the ideal fit.
